I just found these awesome heatpipes that are extremely flat. thought about sharing
usefull in keeping cases neat, and redirecting heat when there is no space for a direct heat sink.

I pull these all the time out of old laptops. I usually keep them for reapplication to network cards. Work pretty well!

I find it fascinating that they use nail-polish remover (acetone) as the fluid. I wonder if other heatpipes also use acetone.

I've seen this kind of heat sink used in routers many times. I did that to a old dlink when I modded it's cpu

I have been contemplating making some pipes myself for other uses, I was going to try deionized.distilled water under partial vacum, or actual pressure of around 1 PSI.

I bet you 1 internet you cannot do this. In fact, I would not even try. I once tried to do this with a car battery, acetone, dust buster, and aluminum plating. Here is what happened.

I used the car battery to create a spark for welding. I welded one end without incident. I then poured in the acetone, and started welding the other end. Spark, poof, flame scorched eyebrows. Bad plan.

@PVTCaboose1337>Don't think deionized distilled water will go POOF!

But, then again... @PVTCaboose1337> "Spark, poof, flame scorched eyebrows. Bad plan."

EDIT:

@de.das.dude> Thanks for the post. I remember seeing these in some radios I serviced, but had never thought about an application in PCs.

here is what i am thinking of doing.
take a pipe, hammer + epoxy one end shut.
then out in a wick, add water, and heat the water till it boils and steam comes out. then wuickly seal off the other end in some way. the steam will eliminate the air from the tube. this will create a vaccum. of course everything has to cool down first.
and due to the vacuum, the water will now eveaporate inside the pipe at a lower temparature.

Do you use heat sinks for NICs?

Water does not assplode. I know how to solder copper pipe with caps, or just together at a crush end. I can add a port on, use a vacuum pump to achieve the pressure I want, and also to inject the water.

3/4" copper pipe, some fine copper wire for the wick, a roll of acid core solder and a few fittings and I could have a tube ready to transfer heat! Then just for the dissipation, copper sheet punched with holes slightly smaller than the OD of the tube, with solder to ensure good contact.

Vapour chambers are cool.

I think bent vapour chambers ( u shape through a heatsink) will be the next big cooling thing.
