Suggest a great 5.1 speaker system

I would like to hear your opinions and suggestions on this matter.
I currently own a logitech z-5500, and, though it does have it's nice points...Im kinda tired of dealing with its troubles- tired of reconfig every once in awhile the cables cause the signals get "mixed", tired of dealing with its config & necessary distance from other gadgets & tired of getting the darn things repaired <a right sat got screwed & the center chan has died 2 times, all with no reason for doing so>:
So, Im willing to move to another brand/system. For quite some time I have pondered going audiophile route, with some serious settings, though I have not jumped yet in because of having to deal with av receivers & other stuff like that. It is fine & dandy, & Im not really scared about having to deal with those "extras" but at the same time...well...I would also like to have <cling?> to the "easy" plug & play kind of set up. Sooo....with that said. What do you suggest? Obviously creative & logitech are OUT. other good quality speakers are limited to 2. 0 or 2.1, so...the options are very very few, actually, the other option that comes to my mind right now is Teufel, but I certainly have no experience with'em & cant find any review, at least not of the recent & tougher set-ups, if you got some other great options, please post'em before I "limit" myself on thinking how to deal with Mirage, polk audio, Anthony Gallo, etc etc etc :p
Thanks in advance.

You have to except that in the computing industry "great 5.1 speaker systems" do not exist.

You have to accept that the home cinema computer route is the only viable option.

Accept those facts, commit to buying a Hi-Fi system and set aside a budget, then I will commit to helping you decide on equipment.

I've made the mistake before of buying a cheap 5.1 surround sound kit for my rig, it was ok for watching movies wih 5.1 support, but as for music it was the worst thing I'd ever heard, my advice is if you do want to go down the 5.1 route don't settle for anything remotely cheap, your going to need some nice full range front (left & right) speakers in place of the one's provided with most cheap 5.1 kits if you was going to go down that route, but then you only have the amperage from the built in amp from the 5.1 so would be very limited by this.

If you really want to go the 5.1 route as I said don't settle for anything cheap, I used to have a really nice 2.1 Phillips kit over 500w of power, and that was great for whatever I did with it really, however it lacked the 5.1 surround but was worth it in my opinion, I'm not sure what else I'm trying to point out besides just don't settle for anything cheap if your going 5.1, you really do have to pay more if your going to want to enjoy listening in clean crisp sound.

Ohh one more note... I'd recommend going digital/optical, it is so worth it :rockout:

I've got both the 4.1 and 5.1 klipsch THX systems, though they're dated (getting onto 10 years old). Been extremely happy with them, but not sure how they stack up against the competition now.

Your just proving my point... if you pay more you certainly going to get ALL your monies worth out of them :toast:

Creative do not make good speakers, from what I understand the OP has come to realise that computer speakers are not adaquate, and he is coming from a Z-5500!

These look nice Sammy

Hometheatre in a box is often overpriced and on par with computer speakers. Really, if you are going into cinema equipment do it properly and get wooden bookshelf or floodstanding speakers and a seperate amp.

Ok, thanks for the replies. Lets address the comments & go further on the topic...
Err...as I stated in the openin, Logitech & Creative <and whatever in between alike> are OUT of the equation.
Im not really limiting myself for "budget" stuff, though it certainly would be nice if could avoid spending up to...$5000 for a pretty awesome set :eek::p
Im not in a big hurry...but neither want to take it too darn long...
....mmm, as I said would like to keep it "simple", even if all seem to point to Ht-build-your-own-&see-how-theheck-to-match'em, really; Teufel seem to be the only possible option in that sense, other than that, theres nothing up-n-ready for a PC <B&W speakers are expensive & a 2.0 option, the same with other things alike> so there lies the problem <sigh>
Anyway, other more audiophile options I've been considering are the Anthony Gallo Strada, Polk blackstone TL are nice, perhaps something from KEF or NHT, hough my favorites so far are the Mirage Omnis, but then, dealing with the connection & power feeding...:ohwell:

I do not think you should restrict yourself on one brand alone, look around the hometheatre websites and buy based what you feel is the best deal. KEF and Polk are very good, Newegg sell Polk very cheaply, do not feel affraid to use Ebay where neccessary.

Before you start browsing for speakers, consider how much room you have, floorstanding speakers can take up a lot of space whereas bookshelf speakers will take up less. Do you have room to mount these speakers? These types of speakers are giants in comparison to computer speakers. Also are these speakers for music, movies, games? Do you care about Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital True HD, DTS, DTS Masters etc? Do you plan on wiring it up to your TV or console. These are questions that you have to ask yourself.

WHats wrong with creative systems, i have had before and again now the creative m2600 2.1 system and its better than a logitech $100 system that i tried out, i dont remember the exact system name but it sucked compared to the m2600 that was $35 actual price.

The logitech even had fake metal mesh net in front that looked like it had the sub woofer cone behinde it but rather it was under the woofer and that was a fake net...

I am sure the models in production in the us by creative arent great, i checked them out but you should try ebay, the creative m5300 mostly from canada will do good for you as for quality, i still have my old system not even a sligh problem yet.

you should they're unbelievably overrated/priced.

As to the OP, are you sporting a sound card with hdmi audio? aka just about any ati card and you want some good sounding audio then you need to build yourself a home theater set up. Not a boxed one but separate speakers, a sub, an amp, and wiring all independent. You can run and HDMI pass through if you use a 1920x1080 resolution which keeps the cabling to a minimum. Yamaha rx-v4xx and above amps are an awesome way to go for amps, cabling get 14 guage speaker wire (12 guage gives a touch more quality but not too noticeable if you don't go w/ expensive as all get out speakers) I've got the paradigm cinema series speakers on mine and boy do they sound good. All around budget I'd put at 700 or so though I'm not sure where the paradigms are selling at now. That's my recommendation for good sound.

edit: subwoofer recommendation is one with a high crossover frequency (130-140ish) so it can make it to where the speakers cut off

I've had Creative in the past, I must admit at the time when I was less knowledgeable about speakers and sound quality I did enjoy it. However now that I can read and understand a basic speaker specification I can see that Creative isnt great choice. Comparing Creative’s m2600 2.1 to Logitech’s $100 system isn’t saying much considering that Logitech's produces rubbish speakers too, the Z-5500 series was just adequately good but was overpriced and built cheaply.

Seriously, look at the specification of the Creative m2600 2.1 and tell me that its good. The satellites are lightweight, no heavier than 4-5lb, how can anything of build quality be that light? The satellites are plastic, how can anything of build quality be plastic, shouldn’t it be wooden? Like the strong sturdy oak wood found on the likes of home cinema speakers. The satellites do not even have bass ports and the satellites woofer is tiny like 3-4" max, whereas on home cinema speakers they have multiple woofers per speaker usually starting at around 10" and is supported by multiple tweeters. Come on, the m2600's subwoofer is only 17 Watts, that is pathetic, in the home cinema world subwoofers start at 100W -150W typically.

Its sad that people that buy PC speakers "think" that they are getting quality.

Fluance AVHTB+ 5 Channel Speakers - $200
BIC V1020 10" Down-Firing Powered Subwoofer - $142
Onkyo TX-SR508 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver - $250

In my opinion thats a great entry level 5.1 setup. You can use the V1220 subwoofer if your room is too big for a 10" sub. The Onkyo receiver is completely plug and play and Windows will even detect it as an Onkyo receiver if you're using HDMI. Additionally it has an incredibly easy to use tuning cone that should get you within a minor adjustment of pitch perfect.

Obviously this only makes sense if you're in the USA....

Well i dunno if you need to use them speakers when wrestling or something or you nail right through them into the wall. as for quality, they are pretty cheap and thats what you would expect for that amount......
And unless you are blasting your house on full volume why would you need so much power and luxury unless just wasting money?

+1 on that set up streetfighter. Though I'm more a fan of yamaha for amps as they use higher quality components from my experience.

Ok guys, after some absence Im back again.
Dent1 thanks for the suggestions, I will consider'em.
Now, talking about some of the candidates I had...this combination:
Mirage omnis OMD-5 surround
OMD-C1 center
Paradigm Seismic 110 subwoofer
That is 1 of my more favored sets/combo; now, What would you use to feed'em???
Thanks in advance :)

Yamaha RX-V465 (or the 467 depending on what's available) If you're going to use some HDMI audio and want to pass it through to your monitor then you'll need at least the 4xx series to do that (that info is from my best knowledge of last year, this may have changed now). Doing a touch of reading too, if you're going to watch some blu-ray and want the dts hd and dolby true hd then you'll need 4xx series and above. The 3xx series won't support those.

Just to add my recent findings while investigating 5.1 for my PC.....

Logitech z5500 - arguably the best PC 5.1 solution gives 10% total harmonic distortion at full output.
Very typical home cinema 5.1 amp (yamaha, onkyo etc) gives 0.03% THD at full output.

Saying that, the best 5.1 system I have seen/heard that was designed for PC use was the Aego 5.1 set - unfortunatley it seems to be discontinued (I'm guessing because of the price £399)

So, i went to Richer sounds, bought a Yamaha amp for £199 and dug some speakers out of the garage and low and behold I now have a 5.1 system with 3 PCs plugged in and a total output of 660 watts. :very happy:

For anyone that is interested the setup is:

Yamaha DSP-AX1 amp (an absolute steal - rrp when new was around £1000 iirc)
AE 109s (front)
Mission 760is (rear)
Yamaha NSC120 (centre)
Yamaha YST-SW90 (sub)
