Seriously: Please be careful making home-made lasers. They are not safe on the eyes and you can do yourself, others or your pets permanent, and I mean PERMANENT eye damage.

Please consider making other "toys" in your spare time. This project is about as cool as making a petrol bomb (molotov cocktail), or dismantling fireworks to make your own mega-rocket.

It sounds like fun, but you are doing nothing helpful, safe, or useful and could end up hurting someone permanently.

Its safe if used properly. I myself know how to be safe, and if I make one for anybody. You CAN go blind, yes, but only if you are being a COMPLETE IDIOT with it!

lasers are merely a hobby, just as are computers, ect. but lasers are more of a hobby like guns, as they are serious. They are fun, dont get me wrong, and are not "toys" as you call it.

if you are not amused by high powered lasers, other people might still be. I thought this was cool because its turning something of uselessness(dvd burner) into something a gadget lover would enjoy having.

DO NOT use these for pet chasers, even reflections will blind them up close.

It is safe and useful IF USED PROPERLY. Sorry for the agressive posts, but i think they should be, to show how dangerous these lasers are. Yes you can hurt somebody, but if you are really that dumb to shine it in somebodys eyes, its your own fault.

ps. Matches arent as cool as a laser you can ignite stuff from like.. 5ft away, lol..

I so want one. But i can guarantee you that i will blind myself eventually. Carelessness will creep in and i can imagine it happening. I mean, it already happens with fairly powerful legal lasers. I cant see myself acting any different with this.

its fading fast. happened last month, and is pretty much gone. the only thing i cant see is something the size of a . while reading, and it is only in my left eye.

I got an offer on a 16x dvd drive, ill let you know whats up with it.

I got 1 diode coming! Ill let you know how it plays out with the first.

I have to make a run to radio shack to buy a 10k potentiometer. set it to full resistance, and slowly turn down the resistance until the diode begins to lase. Turn it a crank or 2 more, then I check the resistance of the potentiometer, and buy a solid state resistor to make the unit smaller. Buy a push button, wire it to the battery, resistor, ect, all to the diode, and boom, laser. I have the collimating lens kit coming in the mail for the first one.

I expect the project to be done by next saturday, so ill let you know how it goes.

Send me some more dvd drives though! gonna do 2 more before I decide if i wanna sell these. PM me, i might make a better deal on a broken drive if the diode is good enough.

I got my dvd burner and took the diode out. I hooked up the variable resistor + battery, and WHOOSH a spill of light all over. I hooked it up to a collimating setup, and it lit a match immediately. Im waiting on my diode housings and PCB's from aixiz right now, then I can complete the laser!

Anybody, i am sure I can do this. $35 shipped + broken dvd burner = laser that can light matches. lemme know!

I have 2 cd rom drives that I dont need. I got them from the computer fair for like $3 each. It sounds like I have a fun weekend ahead of me

yup.. Stephanie is a member on lasercommunity. im basing everything on the same principles, but im fitting it into a pen sized casing, vs a black box or larger palm sized casing. Im making it the opposite color pattern of my green laser too, lol.. Silver case with black hardware, vs my modded greenie, black case with silver hardware.

cd rom will only have low powered IR, which is probably not even harmful to the eye. a cd burner will have a higher powered IR laser, which is harmful as you cant see it, and since you dont have pain receptors in your eye, you wont know that you are slowly degrading your vision. It also diverges much more rapidly than light in the visible spectrum(400-700nm). 808nm light(cd burner diode) can damage your vision because you wont see it reflecting off of things, and IR also reflects much differently than visible light. It can bounce off of satin and semi-matte finishes.

a dvd rom has a low powered IR and low powered 650nm red diode, and a dvd burner @ 14x+ has a 100mw high powered 650nm red diode. the 16x lightscribe drive that I just destroyed has around 180mw i would guess. It smokes everything and lights matches in a split second!

bump bump. diodes anybody?

Darn aixiz still hasnt gotten me the lens housing, and I think the diode died from not being grounded. You think cpu stuff is static sensitive, diodes are that much more that they can die from open winter air.
