lo all thinking of upgrading to the following

asus x58 sabre tooth (about £150)
h70 cooler (about £65)
i7 930 (about £180)
nzxt phantom white (about £90)
patriot ram 3x2gb 1600 (about £90)

so about £575 to upgrade
what ya's think or is it even worth the upgrade looking at my system specs.

cheers all

Depends on what you use the PC for. May also even be better to ditch the H70 and switch your cpu waterblock/use existing with new mount if it's not already 1366 compatible.

I feel it's a little late to go into s1366 now. Especially since it is a dead end and its successor is coming later this year.

just gaming same as currently and some downloading video watching.
was gonna ditch the water cooling as I dont really push it much now days as I dont bother bench marking, so I assume the h70 could hit 4ghz on a i7 930 quietly and easy.
is there any diff between a 950 and a 930 at 4ghz

Don't bother then. In what you do, you will gain like 5%. Upgrade your video card instead and be merry.

Sandy Bridge? I'm sure you'll see big gains in some of the CPU dependant games and it may push your existing graphics card to new heights as well :)

I HIGHLY doubt. The gpu isn't bottlenecked with his current setup.

is it really that small an improvement , thats shocking, so a new card wont bottleneck in my system. will the h70 cool an q9550 ok though

For what you do (mainly single threaded), yes it won't be a difference or very minimal. With currently having watercooling, yes it will cool it ok but what's the sense? Planning on parting out your current loop?

yeah gonna part out the loop as cannot be assed with it as I got a huge stacker at the mo which I have treated like shit so its all rattelly and that lol, and my rads are just leant against the outside of it so not very tidy. so thought about a nice small case and compacting it all down as I cant be assed to mod a case to fit my loop in

I said may, didn't I :) There's no denying that CPU dependant games will benefit big time though.

I would like to stick to the HIS brand and ATI so I take it a HIS 6850 would be a big step up over my HIS 4890

Yes you did, but it would make what ....

10% difference? Meaning if the OP is getting 100fps, new FPS would be (in theory) 110fps. Already at a high FPS so wouldn't "see" a difference.

@mrb

HD6870/GTX460 1GB or above is my recommendation.

Fact of the matter is, at you resolution 1440 x 1050 is it? The biggest bottleneck is your processor. Your HD4890 should coast at that res and if you have the money to upgrade why not go with the latest and greatest?

You mention that you don't really push overclocking as much these days. Run the sandy bridge at stock and still have better performance.

I'm sure that in CPU dependant games (which we are seeing alot more of nowadays) you will see a bigger increase than 10%.

Then yes, in that respect, the graphics card upgrade takes priority and Jr is indeed correct. Give us a few benchies when you get your new card and good luck :)

«his CPU is definitively not a bottleneck. I would suggest a 6870 or 6950 on the ATI side and a GTX 460 1GB or perhaps a GTX 560 on the NV side. bonus with a 6950 is you can unlock it to a 6970

Its not so much the average and max frame rates as most CPU's can easily push a card to a certain degree, it's the minimums and on the whole a better CPU with more IPC is going to give you that, that goes for most games. I mean how may threads about massive momentary drops in framerate from people using outdated CPUs with modern cards does it take to see where the problem lies? It's about balance.

I know his CPU is not bottlenecking but I thought he was gaming at a lower resolution initially in which case his CPU actually would be bottlenecking him, whereas the GPU (HD4890) wouldn't be.

I know this. What i am saying is with a properly tweaked q9XXX chip, there would be near no bottleneck @ a lower res.

No offense, another reason why i myself am still using my chip as a quad when I know I would be ok with it being used as a dual. I am planning on an LCD upgrade soon, still 50/50 on locking the chip back up.

But case in point, I completely understand what you are saying. If the OP did more multithreading, I would have said to go with i5 7xx or i7 2xxx.

Oh and needed to point out ....

If it seems like I am pointing fingers at you, I'm not. Just friendly conversation. ;) I know it's hard to come acrossed and make a point in context with a smile.

Yeh I know bud, you the man :) It's a tough one really. I mean I like to play every game out there so that covers games which are heavily multithreaded, need higher clock speeds, dual core or in some older cases single core and I like to have high minimums as close to 60fps as possible. Some people are easily pleased with 30fps minimum which is also fine but it's all a personal preference.

I know that Bad Company 2 can be played well on a highly clocked dual core but does it have that SMOOTH factor :)

Each to their own, but no mistaking he has a more than capable processor already but if he has the upgrade itch lets coax him into getting MOAR pwr and going sandybridge

Just a reminder, but CPU utilization is more at higher res than at lower res. So if the CPU is only capable of 80fps @ 1440x900, it won't be doing 85fps at 1920x1080. As long as the CPU doesn't limit the game until 80fps, there is practically no point in having a better CPU as frame rate is going to be smooth enough.

Most games are gpu intensive. Therefore, lets the cpu is capable of 100 fps at 1440x900 or 93fps at 1080p, while the gpu only capable of 50 and 38 respectively for example. The GPU upgrade makes a huge difference in most games.

Even if the CPU bottlenecks him at 80fps at 1440x900 and can go up to 75 fps at 1080p and the GPU bottlenecks at 1080p at 50fps and can go up to 90 fps at 1440x900, he still gets good fps at 1440x900 (80 fps) and the increase with a new CPU is pointless, while at 1080p He will only barely gets 50 fps unless he upgrades his GPU. Do not forget, this is for cpu intensive games, a big minority.
