I have one 320 gb western digital and a 200gb samsung hard-drive I have nothing on the 200gb hard drive and im just wondering what would you guys do with an extra hard drive

I have:

OCZ Vertex boot driver (20GB left)
Samsung F1 spinpoint 750Gb i think this is about half full
Samsung F3 1Tb - more then half full
Samsung F4 1.5TB - about 88GB left.

im not 100% sure about the the hard disk space i have left cuz im not at home at the moment

add it blu-ray quality movies and you're likely at 4-5.

personally my nas has 2 terra storage and my server has another 2. combine that with what all my machines can store locally and you're at 6 terra.

I'd use the other HDD for backup... put files on it that are important, and when one HDD goes bad, you still have your stuff.

Otherwise, porn needs space, too.

Here is how I use HDDs.

1. SSD for windows OS.
2. HDD for games and other essential programs (MS Office, Photoshop, Vue, Adobe acrobat and so on)
3. HDD for backing up stuff I find essential and critical. (Drivers for hardware I own, stand-alone service packs, MS ISOs etc)

Backup HDD is then copied to another remote backup HDD on my NAS once a month which is then duplicated right away on a separate disk within NAS in order to insure safety of data.

You should use it as a backup drive. Not just multimedia files, the OS, Steam, other games, backup any physical discs you might have (music, movies) et cetera.

A RAID 0 (also known as a stripe set or striped volume) splits data evenly across two or more disks (striped) with no parity information for redundancy. RAID 0 was not one of the original RAID levels and provides no data redundancy. So if you raid 0'ed your drives, it would be the equivalent of a 400GB drive (~120GB is wasted on from the 320GB drive, though you could probably partition it off and use it). Raid 0 would require you to reinstall your OS.

My advice? Similar to what others suggested.

Partition the WD drive 320GB drive into C: 120GB partition, D: 200GB partition. C: has your OS, applications and games, that, if lost, can be restored by reinstalling. On D: put all your work and stuff that is harder to recover if lost, including your installer files in a folder called "SetUpFiles".

Now install Cobian Backup. Use your spare 200GB to backup your important data. Now you are saved from the rare-but-will-happen drive failure OR accidential delete. Enjoy feeling "secure" in this insecure world!

RAID0? Absolutely NOT. Did you know that your "old" 200GB is so slow compared to a modern 640/1TB drive, that just swapping out the drive for a new one will reap significantly more benefit than what you will gain by RAIDing it. Plus, setting up RAID on the OS drive is a (relatively difficult and) time consuming effort.
