I need some advice,

while mounting an H2O cooler on my 6970, i have torn off a little piece (marked in picture).

I think its a kind of resistor, its on the backside (near) of a memory chip.

Do someone know for what this piece is ?

I haven't run the card, maybe it can be repaired ?

Even with above avarage soldering skills, this should be very difficult to repair.
Have you tried to install the card? It might work, perhaps only with a little less memory than before. Worth a try imho.

Uuh...such tiny pieces are very hard to solder. You need a tiny soldering iron, needles, a magnifier glass and a very, very steady hand.
I have done this on a TV Capture Card a year ago. Not easy. You have to pay attention to not overheating this little thing.

Good Luck.

Oh,

my soldering skills aren't good. I think i don't try to solder it back.

The card is 1 month old, i just put Air cooler back on it and try to RMA it.

I don't think that they remove backplate and see the damage.

Its not very fair but because i buyed three MSI Cards, they earned enough money from me ;-)

Wait a sec, test it first, it may run fine without it and if it does they wont allow an RMA will they...

Ask around im sure you will find someone who have micro electrial soldering skills.

It's a capacitor for memory chip circuit. The card could run without it, test it for artifacts. I doubt they would not see that it's torn off. You would be very lucky if they give you a new card.

As others said the Capactiros are there to finely adjust the voltage to the chips. My bet is that your card will still work or in the worst case scenario, you'll get some artifacts and will need to underclock the memory.

but if you do have to underclock from stock clocks then you can probabily RMA the card ;)

Use a TINY bit of super glue gell and stick it back on FIRMLY.

Might work... And if not once its suck there use your soldering iron at max heat and gently touch each end...

thats an easy fix, soldering isnt as hard as its being made out to be.

This, especially surface mounted caps and such. They're pretty easy to replace.

You might want some general soldering experience first though, so you know what good solder looks like and so on. I wouldn't recomend a first time solderer doing this.

If you're not a welding god, in the best case scenario you'd end up short circuiting the entire board...That's an 8-layer PCB. Just a tad more solder and you'll fork the entire thing. There are a lot more paths than you can see on the surface going through it.

Yah I know, but that cap looks to be pretty far away from other things so should not be a problem. I've done stuff like that and I consider myself a noob.

How ?. with nerves of steal :).

It may still work ok, but if you still have the part that came of and did not rip the circuit of you might be in some luck. If it's a reference board and you need to know which way it goes i can get a pic for you if ya need.

Need a quality soldering iron to do that with a fine point to it. Maybe try some were like a TV repair or a like place to fix it.. Just don't expect it to work.

soldering is doable ... check local store for guy is wiling to solder maybe?

else i guess glue + conductive pen might also work. you can check with multimeter if conductivity change after repair

Exactly what I recommended to him, super glue to hold it in place and a pen/epoxy That cap won't have enough power to it to break down the conductive pen or conductive epoxy.

Do you still have the chip? If so just solder it back on, it doesn't need to be perfect and probably won't even need any extra solder, just heat and it will stick. Polarity is important with a cap so try find an identifying mark on the chip - either a dot or text - and match it to the same cap on the memory chip circuit next to it. They will be the same.

GL :)

I recommend not running the card without it by the by, I lost one of these and it cause my 5770 memory to die followed quickly by the entire card.

This is a good suggestion. if you have a TV repair shop or something nearby you can probably ask them.

so,

i tested the card and it runns fine no probs so far.

I did a 30 minutes run with Furmark at high resolution with 8x AA to stress Memory much.

Nothing strange happened, no artifacts or crashes.

Now im asking me how long this will stay so.

We will see.....

Those people who try to pull a fast one and RMA stuff that they themselves broke cause the rest of us pain.
That's theft.
You yourself may not realize it or even care, but we all pay for that kind of shit.
We pay in higher prices for products.
We pay when we need a legit RMA and get hassled by the manufacturer or supplier.
Ever heard of KARMA?
