going to build a budget cpu for a freind and need to know what is the best bang for the buck AMD motherboard /cpu? his budget approx $200

The 955 may offer better multithreaded rendering, but the 2100 is better if it's going to be used for gaming or standard applications.

I am not a fan of Asrock but since the budget is really low go with it . The link has the combo deal there in it . I would take it .

im not to sure about US prices but i have built 2 pcs with the Asrock 870 Extreme3 and it is $103 in AUS. and for a very cheap motherboard its really quite good and would leave you with a bit extra money for a better cpu. cpu i would say a phenom II 955BE or a 1055t. again im not sure on prices in US so sorry. but thats my recommendation. the 955BE may also unlock the a 6-core with the unlock ability of the asrock

Just get the i3-2100 by itself, and this MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-H61M-D2P-B3 LGA 1155 Intel H61 Intel M...

Much better brand and specs.

how does ECS compare to Gigabyte and Asrock?
so intel is the way to go even on a low budget?

In the last few years ECS has became a name to think about. It's not just a OEM builder anymore.. Their working hard to give people what they want with their "black" series Boards..

as for what have been linked. Puma's is a great deal. The Asrock board is sold out, so combo deal is dead.

do you feel your recomendation is better then the intel combos suggested? want to make sure i get best parts for my friend

The Asrock boards for the 1155 series is pretty dang good. They haven really stepped up their game on the stuff. If your really iffy on ECS, asrock shouldn't let you down. Their is a lot of reviewers that have given much praise for Asrock in the since of their 1155 boards..

Just a heads up the 955BE will NOT unlock to a 6 core, they are both different CPU's all together.

Id almost go the i3-2100 but the only thing is the upgrade path of the i3 is limited, at least you can move the 955BE to a AM3+ mobo ready for bulldozer if he wants to upgrade at a later date?

I would go the AM3/AM3+ route, so maybe get a 4/6 core cpu now and if in future you need more cores (6/8/12) it will be easy with AMD.. A new system will be same price from both Intel & AMD But an upgrade sometime in future with AMD will be cheaper and have more options then Intel

(also am3 is upgradable to bulldozer)

I have also found on no less then 2 sites which say most if not all the features will be supported on bulldozer fx 32nm cpu with AM3 motherboard (a claim by msi)

I use to be big on AMD until Intel passed them up [top line stuff] but this is for my freind who will keep it for several years and not upgrade it because its not his thing.
so that being said is the i3 2100 the better way to go or is it all so close that it won't matter?

i will switch back to AMD myself if they pass INTEL because I think it keeps INTEL on their toes

Yes the i3 would be better . And Intel is made in America and for this reason I plan to stick with them .
