AMD Athlon 64x2 6000+ 3000 mhz
4gb ddr2 6400 800mhz ram

I stuck with 10.4a drivers on my 4870x2. Nothing newer really seemed to benefit.

There is no reason whatsoever to be using anything other than the very latest drivers with this card. When I update my drivers, I generally uncheck all the unnecessary stuff that tends to come bundled with the drivers, and I haven't had a bad experience in quite some time.

Be sure to install the latest CAP also.

On the contrary, there is absolutely no reason to update your drivers unless it will benefit you.

My 4870X2 ran best on 10.4a (on the games I play at least) and had the least bugs that way. There's situations where choosing an older driver is beneficial.

I would tend to agree here and that's why i have stuck with 11.2's.

But i have found an increase in performance from each new driver i have moved to, so i cant complain at all realy, been very surprised and pleased.

And how would you know if it benefits you or not until you try them?

I guess I should have rephrased my comment to say that there is no reason to be afraid of newer drivers. There are no issues preventing the use of the latest drivers with these cards, and they certainly don't work any worse than older drivers. The chance to take advantage of improvements that come with newer drivers is very real.

The last real driver issues with these cards occurred last year. After 10.5, the new drivers that were released broke the internal crossfire in the 4870x2. This issue went on for a few months until they addressed the issue directly with 10.8b and 10.9a hotfix drivers.

Beginning with the next set of drivers, the fix was integrated into the main driver and there have been no major driver issues since that time. Yet that period of just a couple months appears to have been enough to send many 4870x2 owners into a permanent state of fear regarding driver updates. It is very common to hear of people (on this forum as well as others) who are still running 10.4 or 10.5, presumably having never tried anything newer.

Running year-old drivers out of necessity is one thing, but running them due to ignorance is just silly.

If you do insist on running out of date drivers, at least take advantage of the modular nature of the drivers that has existed since 10.2 and get the latest CAP.

I don't run any special tweaks at this point, though I do use MSI Afterburner to overclock all 4 GPUs and it also allows me to monitor usage and temps via my G15 keyboard.

All drivers after 10.4a screwed my scaling, and hoad numerous other little bugs. I tried every single one until I got my 580. 10.4a was the best for the games I play, and the things I do.

Which of the 2 drivers - 11.4 & 11.5b has the better performance in StarCraft 2? Are there any tests/charts of driver performance by versions in games?

The 11.5b hotfix drivers don't contain anything specifically intended for the 4870x2. I would use the regular 11.5 drivers IMO.

It would be difficult to run those tests, because in addition to driver versions out on a monthly basis, there are new CAPs coming out several times a month as well as hotfix drivers (which aren't "upgrades" over the normal drivers, but meant to address specific issues on specific hardware).

All drivers after 10.4a screwed my scaling, and hoad numerous other little bugs. I tried every single one until I got my 580. 10.4a was the best for the games I play, and the things I do.

I use current drivers and my scaling is fine. I wonder why?

I use current drivers and my scaling is fine. I wonder why?

Yeah, because obviously since yours is fine, that must account for every single other person's setup out there. :shadedshu

Fact: In my setup, no driver past 10.4a allowed me to use a centered image at lower than native res over HDMI. It forced full screen scaling, and grayed out all other options, even when I set it to a lower res.

So save your eye rolling for an instance where you may actually be correct, instead of just trying (and failing) to be a smartass.
