Samsung Rumored to be After HP's PC Division

HP surprised many last week, when it announced its move to spin off its PC products division, which sells all HP-branded PC products. That sparked off speculation about which company will acquire it. There are feelers in the industry, particularly in Taiwan, which houses several OEMs, that Samsung could be in the run for acquiring HP's PC business. The Korean conglomerate deals with the IT and consumer electronics industries under the Samsung Electronics company. Samsung is reported to have contacted Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics and Pegatron Technology, major Taiwan-based OEMs of notebooks, to evaluate the possibility of outsourcing notebook orders.

Samsung manufactures its notebooks though OEMs in mainland China, and had in older occasions, contacted Taiwan-based OEMs for outsourcing manufacturing, without any result. The move to contact them now is fueling speculation that Samsung is planning to expand its PC business in a big way. Sources note that Taiwan's notebook manufacturing industry is unmatched worldwide, in terms of cost control and production efficiency. If Samsung takes over HP's PC department, HP's over 40 million PC shipment volume will still need to depend on Taiwan OEMs. However, related suppliers of components such as panel, memory and battery may be affected as Samsung has a rather strong vertical integration supply chain.

I get a feeling they might get caught up by an injunction to stop them gaining too much market share and monopolising the markets. ACER dont have shit on Samsung and will just get rofflestomped,

In fact since Acer are from Taiwan too....Samsung might just turn around and buy them out and carry on rolling.

Since Samsung is already making laptops, it only makes sense to broaden out.

I guess Samsung don't see any profit in making Hard drives in comparison to what they could make with laptops and pre-built desktops.

Samsung already have a great reputation amongst consumers so why not extend.

I suspect this is partly a response to Google acquiring Motorola Mobility. If Samsung can't rely on Android, they'll have some sort of fall-back with WebOS (or some flavor of it).

It could be a really interesting buy for Samsung.
But i don't get, why the biggest Laptop manufacturer (HP) it's quitting the personal computer bussiness? Makes no sense to me ...

Samsung manufactures HDDs and SSDs. The Spinpoint series is one of the best HDDs on the market. My F1 is outstanding and I have an F3 on the way.

i didnt know samsung had gotten out of the HDD market. maybe thats why the last 1tb F3 i bought was $31 with free shipping.

i currently have have 2x1tb F3's in raid 0 nd they out perform the 3x74 gig raptors i was running.

I think the biggest changes will happen next year. samsung are probably just finishing off the paper work and making the necessary arrangements and whatever business they have to take care of before the handover.

as far as i know they are still making drives, and i can still see them being sold on the shelf but im not sure if they have scaled back on production.
