Cover systems

Ok cover systems.

When FPS games are released they tend to mention that the games have a so called cover system. And I truly do not understand what it means. Is it lean they're talking about or just the fact that objects block bullets? I've been confused about this for some time now and I want an answer!

It means that there is a command, button or key that will allow the player to take cover behind something like a wall or barrier. Deus Ex: HR has a "cover system", if you have played that.

Gears of War had it too. It's very good if done well. Allows you to duck behind cover and also 'blind' fire at the enemy.

Basically it's a mechanic that locks your character to a wall or object and you can shoot around or over it in third person.

I can't say this is how it works for Deus Ex: HR because I've never played it.

From my experience i never really liked stupid cover systems. They are for butter fingered console players who need to hide behind cover to shoot someone with stupid gamepad.
But if i had to pick, Deus Ex:Human Revolution has the best one i've seen in years. Takes a bit to get hang of it but then it's great. Just feels better than the one in Crysis 2 which was buggy and i often ended up shooting in the sandbags i was hiding behind or the Gears of War that i never really liked at all...

If you want to see a good cover system play Red Orchestra 2. Thats the best FPS cover system I have seen/used.

I never cared for cover system, maybe because all FPS I play don't have it. Mr. Duke would say that cover system is for pussies. Nothing can beat bunny hopping and rocket jumps

I don't mind them except when they're "forced" cover systems. Like when you're standing behind a pillar without using the cover key and getting shot up like crazy by an enemy standing on the other side of the pillar. Then you hit the cover key and suddenly no damage despite neither you or your enemy moving.

So then you can't even try and play it like a standard fps.
