Does anyone know of any free (not limited or similar) software to rip CD tracks, most likely to .mp3 format, that supports tags. I want to take different songs from different CD's burn them down to one singel CD. Tried to find a program that can convert them first (I'll put all the different tracks in a folder), and then burn them when ready.

I've used CDex for over a decade, supports just about everything, including ID3 tags, customizeable file and folder structure, all sorts of encoders, VBR and will move MP3's back to .CDA (in case you want to burn an audio CD from MPS'3 (Did that once for a Christmas party)

Also itunes bloody sucks.

Practically every piece of software that can play a CD can rip one. Everything from Microsoft Media Player to CD Ripper (yeah that is the name of it). This is a bit of a silly question to be honest.

Yes, LAME is the default encoder with CDex, or at least it always was with previous versions. I started ripping CD's with it back in 1998/1999, moved my entire CD collection to HDD and the 100's of CD's have been packed away ever since then.

and Yes, itunes bloody sucks.

So let me understand the situation. You have a bunch of CDs, and want to rip them to a compilation CD.

1) Windows media player
2) Itunes
3) Winamp
4) Almost every other CD playing software on the planet

What do you have now that won't rip a CD????

Aye those will work but something like EAC will have more options, more choice of encoders and sound a bit better and its a noticeable difference. Ripping MP3 on Windows Media Players encoder wasnt as nice as LAME MP3 Encoder.

I used this back in the day: Eusing Free CD to MP3 Converter 4.2(It was like version 2 or 3 back then)

It did everything I needed... at the time. And, it was pretty simple for me to use.

Quote from site:
Free CD to MP3 Converter is an easy-to-use free CD ripper software that allows you to extract audio files from a CD and convert them to MP3, Wav, Ogg or Wma format. It can automatically retrieve title information from the CDDB database, normalize the output files and supports additional LAME options. You can also use the software to record to MP3 with your microphone, or to convert WAV files to MP3, Ogg or Wma format. Support ID3 tag edit. You can use it freely.

Ok.. I don't know if I wrote things correctly. I do not only want to convert a CD to .mp3.. But I want to burn the different songs as audio CD. My car stereo does not support .mp3 files.

I do not have any burner program except that from M$ itself, and that sucks.

Actually the Microsoft burn utility works pretty damn good. And the same rule applies. If you have software that focuses on playing CDs and audio, it should also rip and burn CD's as well. Literally every single one. There is iTunes, MS Media Player, Songbird, Audacity, Beep Media Player, Foobar, etc. If they don't support it natively, you can usually add it as a plugin feature.

Since you don't want to make the choice I pick Songbird for you. There you go. You will need to install this extension: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1306

I think my burner is out of order. It ripped correctly, then when using "Express Burn", it gave every CD (tested a total of 4 actually..), an error when trying to play it in the car. The stereo does even support rw discs..

For car stereos you are going to need CD-R or CD+R (the former being easier to find). RW for some reason do not work in factory installed or older car stereos.

I have 2008 Honda Si with the standard stereo system, and I'm currently using a CD-RW disk. I might be wrong, but I'm like 75% sure. I'll check and edit this if it turns out I'm remembering something from my parallel existence.

edit: Yup - double checked - CD-RW
