Hello Folks,

Just wanted to share my recent experience with this Board.
The board itself is very handy and easy to OC (2600K at 4.8 Ghz on air).

The downside is when you want to install a second GPU on the lower PCI-E lane. These days good GPU's are longer then the MB itself.

It so happens that the only SATA 3 connector is sitting on the back end of the board right where the GPU would sit and this damn thing is the only SATA connector which has the be connected topside. Even if you try an angled SATA cable, the card wont slide into the lane lock mechanism.

I approached the BIOSTAR TS and this is the email I got back :

This is a motherboard layout limitation. If using a large PCI-express video
card in second PCI-express slot, SATA III port will be blocked. There are
four other SATA ports facing outwards towards the edge of the motherboard,
we suggest for you to use those.

Just wanted to share this with you I you are planning to use a SATA 3 device. Funny enough that these guys are telling me: Just use the SATA 2 ports and be happy. :shadedshu

Well, I hoe this little report helps you if you are planning to double up your GPU's.

its a cheap atx board this is a case of someone cramming a big block V8 into a gogomobile IT can be done but it requires a fair bit of work
next time just buy a Cadillac ......
and they are right you don't need the sata 3 port ITS NOT ANY FASTER
let me repeat that...........
IT IS NOT ANY FASTER TO USE A SATA 3 VRS A SATA 2 PORT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
even your SDD won't max the sata 2 port

This SSD generation DOES max out SATA 2 and DOES benefit from SATA 3 a lot. What SSD do you have OP?

Actually most SATA 3 SSDs max out the SATA 2 easily and benefit a lot from SATA 3 so it is most likely a significant loss for him

You do know many SSDs can do much more than 250 MB/s these days right?

A freakin Vertex 3 is 169.99$ after a 20$ MIR at the egg, and that's the first place I looked

SATA III Sustained R/W : 550/500
SATA II Sustained R/W : 280/260

HUGE difference

The OP should have checked the motherboard specifications first. It's like I get an Iphone and then complain I can't send files by bluetooth.

That is odd, because from looking at it; the SATA 2 ports facing to the side sit higher than the upward facing SATA 3 port. And, it looks like a low profile right angle connector should clear it.

Got pic from newegg:

SATAcl.jpg

I had a Gigabyte mb with about the same layout and the low profile right angle connectors worked, however they touch, but it worked. And, everything locked into place.
Just an observation.

Its not, believe me. I tried 90 degree connectors and the card wont slide into the lock even if I push very hard. Except, your low profile plugs are different from the ones I use. Do you have a link for me or even better the total height of the plug.

AS far as it goes for the speed I need or I do not need, that doesn't really matter here. What matters is the fact that I purchased a product which by the design layout does not allow current gen GPU's to sit in PCI-e lane # 2.

I am also convinced, that in the near future a user will take advantage from SATA 3 speeds and big SSD's. I think there is nothing wrong with being prepared...

Cheers

I use these latch-less ones by Startech, because the latched seem to be taller.
Unless, you are going to move your system around alot or some other personal reason... I have not had any problems with the latch-less ones.

StarTech 24" Right Angle SATA Cable Model SATA24RA1

If you google "Ultra Low Profile SATA Right angle cable" you can find more by other companies and sellers.
SATA 2 or SATA 3 rating does not really matter, as there is not any electrical characteristic difference.

might be-able to sand a mm or two off and make it fit
