Basically, my HP Laptop isn't booting. I'm getting the NTLDR is missing error. When I fix that, I get Bootmgr missing. When I fix that, it goes back to NTLDR missing.

I have 2 partitions, C: XP, E: Win7.

I removed the Win7 Partition and now it isn't booting. I tired to reinstall Win7 on the E: partition but for some reason I can't. Even after formatting and all that.

So now, I want to wipe the entire drive and start from scratch. However, I do not have a recovery disc. And the hidden partition with the recovery software is long gone.

Is there any way I can use the OEM key on my laptop on a Non OEM XP disc?

This of course would be my last measure. I'm still trying to fix it but for some reason, nothing is working. And usually I have no problem fixing it with the bootrec /fixmbr command.

No, unfortunately an OEM key won't work with a non-OEM disc. You'll have to borrow one, If you can. Or, you may want to try calling Microsoft. It's possible that they might send you one for a nominal fee.

Also, now that your HD is wiped clean, couldn't you try installing 7 again? It might all work properly when starting from a clean slate.

What I don't recommend, is to download one off a torrent, as it's likely to have malware embedded within it.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to try since it does not seem like you have many options.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work that way i tried it once on a old pc i was fixing up for somebody and the installed copy of XP retail would not accept the OEM key of the machine so just ended up ehhh "borrowing longtime"of the operating system, wouldnt hurt to give it a bash :)

I'm going to give it a shot. This laptop doesn't like Win7 (BSOD). 6 year old core 2 duo. HPDV1700. Wiping out the hard drive right now and will be installing XP.

In other news, I did get the New Asus UX31 and this thing is pretty!

It likely wont work tho there's a chance it will work if you activate over the phone which requires you to punch a bunch of numbers into your phone and then back to the pc but it works sometimes with mixed up oem/retail installs and keys

As long as they both have the same edition (pro or home) and both are 32 or 64 bit the answer is yes it will work, you can use it.

Got the recovery disc today. 2 dvds. One containing the operating system and the other came with the bloatware and drivers.

Didn't use the 2nd dvd. SP3 basically included all the divers needed. Besides quickplay buttons and other HP drivers. I just downloaded those on the site.

In any case, this thing is running smooth and pretty fast.. I might just return the Asus UX31.
