Analysts were predicting that Sony would soon announce profit losses of nearly 50%. Sony is very happy to say that this is clearly not the case. While competitors like Microsoft and Nintendo helped to steal away possible console profits from the PS3 and PSP, Sony excelled in...just about everything else. Movies produced by Sony yielded spectacular profits. Combine that with "encouraging" sales in the television show and digital camera department, and Sony "only" took a 5.3% profit loss from last year. Sony admits that if they had sold the PS3 at prices closer to production costs, they would have made a lot more money.

~~~every one is playing on their pc/x360/wii~~~
Im glad they acknowledged that this beast is a one burden too heavy for consumers to bear. Drop it down 100 bucks. The sales and software will make up for the lost profits
I don't know if $100 is necessary, but I do believe a price drop for the 60GB model down to $400 is needed if they want to compete.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, for Sony to make money off the software they need to be selling the hardware. Right now they are having a hard time moving the hardware, which means they are having a hard time moving the software for that hardware.
Yea and that would mean prices would go up not down, and they would have sold a lot less too.
They recouped a ton of PS3 losses through PS2 sales. PS2 outsold all of the new consoles during the holiday season.
For those of us who have a PS3 & a 360, know to buy all multiplatform games for the 360 - because the online community makes online games much, much more fun. Virtually nobody has a headset for the PS3, and you can't communicate easily like you can on the 360. If sony wants to make $$$ they need to start making some killer Single-player games like Shadow of the Colossus, because their system is really lacking in the online department.
