The next time you "need" to upgrade something, consider the real cost. Not just the price you pay on ebay or at the egg for the cheapest online quote. Consider what it cost someone in Africa to mine your crystal that vibrates in the new iphone you "need" to have.

Consider the heavy metals and waste in the mobo you just replaced because the new i7 chip is better again than the one we had 12 months ago. What about the guy recyclying that mobo by holding it over a brazier to burn off the board and let the copper run out.

Do we all "need" this? Because our need for doodads and corporate need for money is driving the terrible conditions we see overseas.

If you don't "need" it, but it "would be nice to have", then ask what price would I pay, if I could find one that was made ethically and environmentally. If I can't find anyone who makes it that way, then fine, buy it and send some extra money to organisations that help educate people so that they can have freedom and choice in their life. To farm for themselves, to read and write and run their own business. Pick your favourite organisation and add the donation to the "cost" of the consumer doodads we buy.

To sit there and say, we can't do anything is not true. There are ways you can try make a difference to the lives of those who are exploited to give us the consumer lifestyle we enjoy.

indeed, all of the above is true. Yes, the difference between "need" and "would be nice to have" is difficult. It would be nice to have an i5 or i7 or one if the AMD hex cores, but I don't need it. I do enjoy gaming however and support organisation like Oxfam and Amnesty internation al and Red cross as part of my monthly tithing.

I did not say, don't buy anything, I said think of the true cost.

You are just as bad as anyone else. You might even be worse because you know the true cost and STILL buy it and preach about "Think of the children!".

Personally I don't care. I just want my cheap goods. I'm not even trying to hide. GIMME GIMME GIMME!

Try re-reading that bit again rather than hide behind the simple defence of "your not perfect so your point is not valid"

We all consume simply being born in a western country.

It is difficult to not by "made in china", where possible I choose products that arer made in USA or Europe, or better yet Australia. Where I can't, I try to support organisations that work in 3rd world countries to undo some of the problems that I am causing by my consuming.

Why do you have such a problem with this?

Do you not look for products made in your country first, before looking for the OS built alternative? Eg tools, cars etc

Pfft. I want the Batman: Mass Suicide at Foxconn Edition. You get to swing in as a bleeding heart super hero and save them before they hit the ground. But you have to be careful because the rope was made in China.

What choices is there ??? Nothing is made in AMERICA ! So really the choices is live with out all this fancy stuff ( In as much as you would be living in the dark ages ) Or suck it up and buy it up ! You want change ? You want things to be different ? Then you have to make the leaders KNOW ! It is political They have out sourced every good tech job to CHINA for the last 30 years and only NOW are we seeing the ugly cost of it ALL ! Slave labor , Children treated like animals ( In every respect ) people Forced to work for little to nothing at all ! The list is huge and the fact that WE Americans allowed this to happen is more of a crime than any thing I see ! Jump I say let them ! Change happens when people have taken all they can and have nothing else left ! There is nothing FREE about Freedom !

It isn't like I haven't mentioned this one time or another. Foxconn employees are salves.
Apple products are the most controversial, because Apple knows about this, sends people over to China to inspect the assembly lines, the representatives sweet-talk them to look elsewhere, feed them well and off they go back home. And then Apple products are expensive (I guess the abundant cheap stuff isn't true for all products). Same applies for all consoles as well.
Oh, and if you think Foxconn only makes small components for motherboards, think again. If you have a socket 775 Gigabyte board, it was made there.

Where i work, whenever we have high profile visitors, production is interrupted and we start on a heavy-duty cleaning spree (the day before or several days before). Not that it was very dirty: it just wasn't as spotless as they'd like.

Last May, we were supposed to have been visited by the owner of the group and they even went as far as renting a warehouse to store the excess crates of rings and bearings (about 80 or so crates).

In the end, she ended up not coming because she had to go to South America for something i don't really recall.

My point is, when the visitors arrive, the don't see the reality: just what the factory's officials want them to see.

Tye

Yes I do . I have been doing this for years . I will only buy made in America unless there is NO other choice !

Pfft. I want the Batman: Mass Suicide at Foxconn Edition. You get to swing in as a bleeding heart super hero and save them before they hit the ground. But you have to be careful because the rope was made in China.

I didnt like that game very much it was an alright story line but I ended up buying south atlantic whale hunting extravaganza. Its cool but the boiler level is hard the temp has to be just right or you need to get another whale if you heat the lard up too much.

I haven't played it yet. Im all un-involved in a Dafur MMO right now. Its a game where you just sit around and watch ethnic cleansing. If you do anything you lose points.

I try and not buy products from any company that works with Foxconn. So no apple, no Intel, no Microsoft other than software...

There is a list on wiki of the companies they build for.

Speak with your wallet.

Trickson, I think Steevo summed mit up best: speak with your wallet.

I agree, sending jobs OS has been the mainstay of gov't policy for some time and the results in AUS are as severe as in the US I imagine.

I am not saying live in a wood cabin with logs cut from a stone axe, but that is where people always go with this type of discussion. I love modern living, the access to modern medicine and information that is unparrelled in human history etc. These things are great.

But some things are wrong, and when we see that they are wrong we can look for other answers. I just bought an AUS made gas heater, it cost more and there was only one model, but it supports industry at home with apprenticeshiops and trade skills. The carpet in our house is dyed without harmful pigments and milled here in AUS, and again costs more.

I don't live with earthen floors and no heating, for f@$ks, sake, who would choose that.

As to Mailman and Solaris, what is your point guys, you have been happy taking the piss out of my point, but what is yours.
Are you happy to support jobs going overseas, is that funny?
Is it ok for murder and rape to be byproducts of our consumerism as long as we are not reminded of it?
Is being thoughtful wrong because we may all go back to living in caves?

Obviously you didn't make these things happen, but they are happening.
What are you suggesting.

I do have to admit, though, I am a consumer and I love cheap stuff. Just like TMM said (OM NOM NOM). I still frown upon certain companies where their products leave the factory, with a production cost of a 5th (or less) of it's final retail price. Of course I'm talking about most laptops and Apple products. Microsoft stuff is incredibly cheap. I don't think they are making that much profit there. Motherboards...well, ASRock's are made there now, but then again, ASRock has always had cheaper parts.

Simple. Put your money where your mouth is. Stop buying anything made in China. Can't? Like your bling, bling? Then give it up. All the crying in the world will not make any difference. All the donating in the world won't make a difference to things like this.

Just buy your toys and accept the price or don't. But don't go around ACTING like you care. Because you don't. You proved that the second you bought something built with cheap labor.

The "point" Solaris17 were making is simple. No no one on this forum is an angel. "Thinking" about what we buy will not stop ANY of us from buying. The only people who can help the people in China is........wait for it..........the Chinese people.
