my stepdad and mom have to send their DVR back to dishnetwork TODAY and we are trying to pull the video off of it.

i've read around the net about how to get the stuff off.... typical hook the drive up via sata and use linux or windows with PVR explorer to get the files off.

i plug in the drive via sata using the onboard intel controller and it doesnt see the drive at all. causes system hangs and wont boot into windows, linux, or any os or live cd while the drive is connected.

i have to plug in the drive over usb for the pc to run right and see the drive.

the drivers get installed but windows cant see it to mount it.

i've tried installing linux FS drivers in win 7 and i still cant see the drive.

is it just locked or what? im about to throw this thing into the damn street.

HELP asap!!!!

Returning for repair or cancelling service? If the DVR is still functional, can't you just plug in one of your USB drives to the unit and Archive the recordings? I'm pretty sure I've done that with my ViP722 once before. At least that way you have a copy of the recording on a drive you can keep and can work on decoding/unlocking/converting them later.

Look up the manual for the PVR and see if it says anything about getting the videos off of it via USB or whatever.

Some PVRs use proprietary file systems which you can't read (at least out of the box) on a PC. Total pain in the butt..

Its been maybe 2 years since I did it. All I remember is plugging in a 1TB HDD, the DVR formatted it, and then I am pretty sure when I highlighted a TV show from the DVR I had an option to move it to the External Drive.

Let me see if I can find an HDD around here somewhere to test (if you still can't find the option).

What model DVR? On the ViP series this feature is supposed to be free.
