I doubt 99% of people out there would ever even fill 512mb of video ram...
Let alone 1gig or more.

Check out the performance differences between a x1950 256 and a x1950 512...
It's near and most the time absolutely nothing to a gamer.

Not yet anyway. the more complex things become the more ram we will use in general. we always say it isnt needed....until it actually is.

512MB is good for high resolutions like 1920 x 1200 plus some 4k x 4k high-res textures and high AA + AF + HDR... It'll fill up quite nicely then.

Yes, but I cannot stress this enough -- this is NOT how big the card you will buy will be.

This is for Dell and friends who attach handles on their cards for their XPS systems and such. So if you buy an XPS with an R600 in the future you will get this cooler/card combo.

The Retail X2800 XTX will be the same length as any X19x0 series card.

That's not big enough. For the money these will cost, I want bigger. The bigger they are... the more area for heat dissipation... assuming bigger heatsink/fan combo on the bigger cards.

On a second thought... given that the GPU is now more powerful than a CPU... time to move the GPU to the mainboard and the CPU to a slot. LOL

The HSF/cooler is rumoured to stick off past the end of the PCB in the 9.5" retail versions, if that's any consolation...

Personally however, I would rather things get smaller (ie. more efficient) than bigger. If they could keep their cards down to X850 size that would be amazing... My 'old' computer is still fairly new (bought beginning of '05) and has PCIe. Can't fit anything longer than 8" though.

It's a sign of how things are changing so much for the worse... Instead of making one card as fast a possible, don't stress it too much and make a decently fast card that is capable of running in tandem with another (forces dual-cards down consumers throats). Instead of making a cool running chip, don't stress it too much and make a hot one (forces dual-slot coolers down consumers throats). Instead of designing a more efficient PCB, don't stress it too much and make it as long as you need (forces foot-long cards down consumers throats a la 8800 GTX).

Progress .

tbh, if the smaller 9.5 inch version ships with intergrated water cooling (a great choice if you ask me, as water cooling works wonders and if there is UV water... that is even better!!!) I will do anything to get it.

Games already like FEAR draw upto 550MB of memory at any single time just in 16XX x 12XX on max resolutions, when you get to the 2XXX resolutions it can be drawing upto 800MB at any given time, thats an awful lot of system memory swapping = loss in FPS.

You cant even play GRAW above 1280 x 1024 (when it first came out - think a patch later may have changed things) without 512MB GDDR.

No, the bigger they are the more area they fill in your case, that makes less air circulation = higher ambient temps = higher everything temps.

I don't get it. So could the 9.5'' card still be the most powerful and can I still buy it seperate?
because if that's not the case I might need to cut a hole through part of my tower to fit the big one..

But when these more complex things come out. Ther'll be a new graphics card everyones after, that makes the R600 look like a turd.
