The first thing you need to do is run a memory diaganostic tool like: http://www.memtest.org/

The other thing to ask is if the laptop has had a hard fall or thump recently...creating a loose connection of some sort.

Also a hard drive diagnostic would be good. Please post brand and model # of the hard drive. Every brand manufacturer has it own tool.

You can use this FREE version: Speccy to find out what hardware is internal: http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

Meaning that a dust clogged fan will cause overheating because it can't expel the hot air.

Never been opened and cleaned. Not very old, but it's something I could check.

Pass memory checks.
I'll look into finding out what hd it is.

Thanks.

While you got it open, make sure the active fan in there is even working;)

Make sure the ram is seated correctly. This happened on a laptop of mine after I replaced the ram. Laptop ram is a bit harder to seat correctly than desktop ram.

Hmmmm. With speccy running, it's up to 68c(cpu) and I still can't hear the fan come on....and I'm sure I used to be able to hear it. Funniest thing tho, not it's not freezing up.

Perhaps if I toss it against the wall.....(or not).

Guess I'll take her apart, later in the week when I have some time.

Thanks all.

I think I have fixed my craptop. First, used driver sweeper to rid myself of any crap, and then driver genius pro to update all drivers and bingo bango boingo it no longer seems to freeze. Tossed in a laptop cooler for good measure, but it seems getting away from dell's drivers did the trick.

Thanks again.
