Sapphire hd5770 vapor-x won't overclock

So I tried overclocking my 5770, and if I raise either the GPU clock or the memory clock I get some nasty screen tearing/artifacts on my 2nd screen (1280x1024 LCD) and some small artifacts on my primary screen (1080p LED).

The GPU clock gets max 860MHz and the memory clock wont overclock at all.. Temps are from 37-60C. The card is over a year old, but it would'nt oc in the start either..

Also I used the AMD overdrive..

Am I doing something wrong or is it just a bad GPU?

Overclocking isn't guaranteed. My HD6950 won't go beyong a 20Mhz core OC when about 100Mhz is the norm.

For the memory, it could be that the modules your card use are already running at their maximum specified speed.

You could try raising the voltage and see if that gives you better results. Use TRIXX/Afterburner or if that fails you could mod the card's BIOS.

You're not going to see an improvement; perhaps 1-2 frames at the cost of more heat and power.

Hmmm thought the hd5770 cards were great at overclocking. Must have gotten a bad card then. I will try Afterburner, but modding the BIOS is prob beyond me..

^ i call bull. My 5770 overclocks very well. 950-1000core 1300mem

I see 10+ frames in some games.

An unmodified 5770 does NOT have voltage control. Ive seen mod's. But for the work its not really worth the effort. At stock voltages you can get 1000/1300 easily with a solid card.

Found out that when disconecting the other display the tearing stopped. now I can overclock it pretty much without any bugs on the screen.

Maybe the secondary DVI transmitter doesn't like the overclock(?)

Interesting, I'll try installing older driver. Sorry mine is blue..


EDIT: OK I tried installing the 10.12 driver. One thing I noticed is that when using dual displays the default clock is 400/1200 idle. However whenever I apply the OC the clocks drop down to 157/300, thats when I get the screen tearing. I'll try an older driver and see if it helps..

EDIT2: Tried 10.1 and it doesnt fix the problem. Next up ill try the 9.12 (its the oldest driver for 5700 series?)

EDIT3: The problem is still there, as soon as I touch the clocks it drops down to 157/300 idle. It should be 400/1200 and reconnecting the displays doesnt help. All I can do is restart the PC, but then I have to reapply the OC. If I remember correctly there should be a way to fix the OC in the ATI overdrive so it stays that way. Maybe that will do.
BTW I remember having a similar problem on my Qosmio G40, when I installed newer drivers for the 8600M the clocks stayed at max making the GPU very hot even when idle. Had to roll back to the old drivers.. :/
