As title, is it a good deal to purchase that card for a price closer to £100. I know about the ATI 7850 but I need a GPU specifically for PhysX amongst other things. What about a regular GTX 650 for £70-80?

See how much a 660(non Ti) costs,as far as i remember those have really good price/performance.

About £160-170 cheapest option for the non Ti 660.

If you can afford it i would jump on the 660,if you cant i would try to find a cheap 560Ti as it is faster than the 650Ti.

I don't believe PhysX itself is too common anymore. It's been "replaced" by CUDA which, in turn, should be (and already is being) replaced by OpenCL which is hardware independent.

Is there a specific thing you have in mind that you need done? If it's something like Folding@Home or old games that only support PhysX, then yes, you'll probably want a nVidia card.

Today's compute performance in general though (especially for the price), I would suggest not eliminating an AMD card.

As for the price, I'm afraid I can't be of help there since I am from the land of cheeseburgers.

Physx is just a physics engine sort to speak.
It is not the same as CUDA which is nVidia's computing API.
OpenCL is an open standard similar in purpose to CUDA.

PhysX has been dead for years. It has little to no game support and shouldn't even be an after thought when making a decision on cards.

Did you even read the review here on TPU?
Forget PhysX. If you don't believe me, show me a review where it shows that you "just have to have it". Just buy the card that you can afford that meets your needs. Look at the review and see how it performs for the type of games that you play.

Theres no reason he cant have physx with a good card at a fair price,a 660 offers all of that.

There's a big difference between a Ti and non Ti 650. They are build on different chips (GK106 vs. GK107) and the Ti is much faster. If the 7850 is not a choice and you want NVidia in this price range then you should avoid the non Ti. Of course the 660 is better.

So for example I don't need an NVidia card to make the most of PhysX in the Unreal Engine, it can be done with an ATI card instead?

First of all you need to clear something up. Is it the GTX 650 or the GTX 650 ti that you can get for £70-80.

PhysX for the most part is a marketing gimmick, very few recent games support it. The few older games which do support it can run fine on an ATI card.

IMO you need to drop the idea of PhysX and buy a video card whether ATI or Nvidia that offers you the most performance (frames per second) for your budget.

PhysX is proprietary software NVidia and can be done exclusively on NV GPUs. There are only a handful of games that use this (most notably Batman series, Borderlands 2 and this new F2P Hawken). All other physics engines developed by Havok and others can be run on any hardware.
As for Unreal Engine, that is the core game engine for many games and as far as I know add-on physics engines used are, depending on developers, Nvidia's physX and others.

not all Nvidia's GPU's from 8x00Series can do PhysX/Cuda.

Guys I found a 7870 for £160 is that a good deal? Also is it worth it over a £120 7850?

It's slightly cheaper than normal only by a tenner...So an average deal.

Also is it worth it over a £120 7850?

You have to do your own research. So I'll let you make up your own mind.

That depends on which 7870 it is. ;)
