My main desktop wont boot just an endless black screen. Now I have pulled the hard drive to try and get all my data. Im using a Vantec sata Ide to usb reader. Everytime I plug it in it reads a full NTFS hard drive but access is denied showing all blue and no pink. the hard drive is a sata western digital caviar blue 320gb. Is there anyway I can get my data off the hard drive.

Try using GetDataBack for Fat (or GetDataBack for NTFS), they have a trial version that let's you see any recoverable data before you buy the program ($69.95). It has options to recover deleted data and data from an accidentally formatted drive, along with a few other options. It's worth a shot, and if you don't see your data, it doesn't cost you anything.

It sounds like a virus that has been going around where I work. It hides all the files on USB drives and sets them to hidden, but doesn't actually delete them. MSE is unable to fix the problem. I'm not too sure what program can be used, but the fix is simple. Maybe someone here may have encountered it and know more?

Hiren's boot CD doe's contain anti-virus software but so much more aswell, klik on the link provided & just below the link to download there is a link to show a list of all the software included on the CD, really handy tool for problems like this.
It boots up into a mini windows XP that you can run all the tools from if that helps or you can run tools in DOS mode also

try ubuntu live cd to access the drive

here is a tut

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

Download: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit

also u might try memtest86 to check your memory from ubuntu´s live CD

+1: Ubuntu live cd should give you access to the contents of the drive you can backup your stuff. Linux tends to bypass NTFS security permissions when you're root and usually grants everyone read access.

+2 to this.

If the disk is corrupted in any way, you can also use "dd" to make a copy of any good sectors as dd will happily ignore the bad ones.

Nice Call

try ubuntu live cd to access the drive

here is a tut

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

Download: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit

also u might try memtest86 to check your memory from ubuntu´s live CD

As the title says, nice call, and thank you for the knowledge. I've used Ubuntu Live CDs for other purposes but didn't know it could read a drive with a corrupted boot sector. This will surely come in handy for many users.
