So I received my 500GB Velociraptor today and put it in. On the part where it says "completing installation" an error pops up saying "Windows isn't compatible with my hardware". I mean, I'm confused, I have a good PC?

You could do with filling out your system specs as no one presently knows what you have :), you'll find that under the user cp tab.
no suggestions really except download all the latest drivers for your motherboard and extract them to a usb stick ,afaik that drive is a standard ish hdd and should'nt need any special driver per say but it could be the motherboard driver having an issue, also set the sata / ide controller to AHCI in bios not Ide and not raid unless you are raiding two disks ,in which case the issue list might grow:)

specs please its hard to suggest anything without them:D

ah i was typin a while , mobo drivers still to me as it should have just worked.

Connect it to your SATA 2 port instead of your SATA 3 port and try again, report back please :)

Oh, and make sure device is set to IDE in BIOS. Probably will already be on IDE as you haven't come from an SSD I presume, but still check.

Install from a USB

And Uplug all other drives when installing. You dont need to set it to IDE ether. AHCI will work fine

At the risk of rising to your comment - have you tried any of the various fixes that Google has found? Did you plug it into the JMicron controller or the ICH10R? Have you tried both? What have you tried?

Is it because I haven't updated my motherboard drivers? Is it necessary to install motherboard drivers? I ask because I've never installed motherboard drivers in the past 10 years.

That MB is more like 5 yrs old, but even that is a long time. Go to Intel's site to get the latest chipset drivers, since X58 chipsets are made by them. You can get the rest of the drivers and the latest BIOS from ASUS.

Also make sure you choose NTFS file system when installing the OS. IDE or AHCI shouldn't matter. AHCI is mainly critical for SSD or RAID use. If you're not using an SSD or RAID, IDE will work fine.

That said, since it's best to set it before installing the OS, you may want to set it to AHCI in case you ever upgrade to an SSD or use RAID. That way you won't have to reinstall the OS or use the registry hack to change to AHCI.

Windows will not allow you to install it if the drive is not formatted as NTFS. It would give you and error when you chose the drive if it wasn't NTFS prior to actually installing.

Also AHCI is not just for SSD or RAID. If you were to use RAID. You would set SATA mode to RAID, not AHCI, then exit BIOS and hit whatever it prompts you to hit to set up RAID in the RAID configuring BIOS.

You should be setting AHCI regardless if you are using a standard hard drive, or SSD, if they use a SATA interface. Otherwise you are choking the performance from your drive if it is SATA and the mode you set it to is IDE.

OP: AHCI is set in the BIOS right?

Looks like your board only has SATA II ports so you should have no issue with the install. But I would atleast update your BIOS for your board if you haven't already, and load up your SATA drivers during install.

That should work.

but my question to you is, why did you get a velociraptor drive instead of an SSD?

You should be installing motherboard chipset and SATA drivers everytime. They should be the first thing you install after doing a new windows installation.

The drivers have nothing to do with the initial Windows install. That would come after the completion of Windows install.
I have to think it is either a hard drive setting in the bios as has been mentioned already or there is a problem with the hard drive itself.
As mentioned already, go to Western Digital's site and download the bootable diagnostic software and run that from boot up.

That's what I said didn't I. Install motherboard drivers after the completion of the Windows install should be the first thing you do.

Now if you are having issues installing to a drive in SATA III ports from say a third party controller you will more than likely need to load up the drivers for the controller prior to installing.

When my PC boots up, I still get that RAID windows with the green text. Like when I had my 2 SSD's in RAID. Can't you remove that? Oh in the "Advanced" tab in the BIOS, I've changed the option from IDE to AHCI where it says "Controller Mode" just under the SATA bit.

My motherboard has no SATA III ports and the drive is SATA III. Isn't that why it's not working?

reset your BIOS to factory defaults. Then set the Controller mode to AHCI. That should get rid of any of your RAID configuration. Can also remove the CMOS battery for 30 seconds as well.

My motherboard has no SATA III ports and the drive is SATA III. Isn't that why it's not working?

No I wouldn't think so. The drive will just run at 3gb/s speeds.
