3ghz is fine on a HT link, although pointless as itll never get bogged down and only really tested when taxing the NB/SB etc

and hwinfo only shows whats on the multiplier and rounded to the nearest it thinks.

for example mines @ 2650mhz but hwinfo is showing 2400mhz

also its undervolted to hell on OPs, 1.25v is stock. and 1.3-1.35v is the usual spot for 2600mhz or near

dude you have your northbridge is deffinately set too high at 3000+ im surprised its stable but the cpu has a bus thats synced with that (Cpunb) , lower it to 25-2600 and your temps should drop considerably also are you auto volt overclocking?

I know Hwinfo is missreporting its speed as it does on mine but cpuid says yours is at 3166 , for eg mines at 2646Fsb and Ht also at 2646 now with vref set to 220 Vref x22 for 4.85ghz cpu at 1.48core volts 1.4 cpunb volts and 1756 Mhz meory at cas 8(memory speed above this creates heat and does little for performance ,ive tried) lower that and youll be fine (via bios multiplier) i asked about volts because auto is bad at that speed.

That northbridge is changing auto when i change the frequency.

What are safe settings for both of them?

I have manually set the voltage.

cpunb is set at 1.2v.

you can adjust multipliers for HT speed(2600-2800max(no point any higher) and also Nb x11or12 for 2600max (its normally at 2200 so a reasonable oc) all via advanced cpu settings in the bios .

id recomend 1.475 core volts max for temp reasons and 1.35 cpunb volts with Nb max at 1.3 but those are opinions , low memory volts ,low cpunb volts and and lower core volts will all bring temps down so if they are high or "auto", try lowering them a step at a time individually(from the present indicated load values obtained from bios or hwinfo) to remain stable yet run cooler:)

I have the latest cpuz that was released last month

And one of my cores stopped working with prime95 running for few more minutes

So shall I try for 4.5 to 4.6 and be happy? But as I said, temps are just couple of degrees lower at 4.5 than 4.8.

well certainly do not run it long term at those temps(70 socket temp) so i suggest backing it down and lower core v to 1.425 ,then read the fx oc thread and D1nkys link but check your HT and NB speeds as 3166 is too high for either you want to aim for nb=24-2600 Ht24-2800 max's:)

Beginners Guide: How to overclock AMD Processors F...

I overclocked using the same setting as in this video

copying isnt key, learning your systems limits is key and thermal limits aply above all others friend

the guy in the vid which i watched all of, is half right but he does say you may have to lower HT and Nb multipliers as you oc the Vref frequency that all the other busses are timed off and multples off so as vref increases drop HT and Nb multi's to keep it lower, high speeds can boot but lead to coruption at best and much worse over time.

Alright, I will do this thing, default all settings in bios. Will monitor temps @ different frequencies and post the results.

For that voltage that's about what it should run at, your NB and HT speeds are all F'd up, I would reset and go from there, 60 degrees is about where you wanna be, but keep it in mind running a game will not run the pc as hot as what you are here, you will find in games you could drop 10 degrees on this temp especially if you have extreme calibration turned on, Either way you look at it, you need more practice. I generally set the cpu ratio first then do all the other stuff later, like try 230x20 and get your NB HTT speeds right, they should be around the 2400-2600, if you are new its easier to set your CPU BUS to a whole rather setting it to 242 or something like that.

At work i just leave everything standard then raise the multi, this gives a indication of how high the chip will go, then once i work out its max i do all the other stuff later, ie adjusting the Bus, NB and voltages, each to their own but if you do a lot of them, you kinda know a safe Voltage/ BUS/ Multi every chip will run at out of the box.

Ok, so here's my default BIOS settings, here's how it looks after running Prime95 for 20-22 minutes:

http://postimg.org/image/g17b3dd57/

I've just increased the multiplier to 21, ot get 4.2 Ghz keeping other values at default(manually).

Huge increase in temps with Prime95 running for 9-10 minutes:

http://postimg.org/image/4x47dx66p/

Something looks wrong with my set up or am I doing it wrong? for .2 Ghz so much increase in temps?

My default voltage is 1.387, and I have maually set it to same value when increased the multipier. I've also made other changes necessary for OCing.

Is the temps rise normal for .2Ghz OC?

If so, this is most of your problem. The case has hardly any airflow and you can't get the heat out of it.

Quick test- take the side panel off and put a household box fan blowing into or drawing air from your case. If you get at least a 10C drop in temp.... get a better case and buy more fans. Until then, don't overclock.

I have tried the box fan thing, just 2-3 degress drop, I have tested this more than 2-3 times.

looks like you got a bad seat on the cpu or the paste is crap.

a .2v increase should never do that unless youre in the desert.

its only usually a few degrees.

good to see the throttlings gone.

That case is terrible, narrow, no air flow, not ceiling exhaust. If I was you I would be getting it as close to 4.5ghz on the lowest voltage I can and just leaving it

Hey! I had that case as well! But sadly, it's collecting dust somewhere in the storage.

I had upgraded to Coolermaster HAF series 912, and I'm very happy with my purchase, I've been using it for about 1.5 yeasr and I love it, looks great with any color LED fan as well! worth my 50 bucks. (I personally use blue).

It offers a lot more airflow comparing it to that one you're currently using, and it has a dust filter on the front intake and bottom exhaust for PSU of the case.

I installed 200mm fan on front vent intake and top exhaust, its very nice I highly recommend this case if you're looking for a replacement, you can also install 140mm or 120mm fan on the side for extra intake.

Also if you think the thermal paste isn't enough, try comparing it to this chart http://i.imgur.com/OYEf60f.png

Source of chart: http://forum.hwbot.org/showthread.php?t=71658

good luck!
Cheaper then the CM HAF-912, just no side fan for gpu, but has 2 top and 2 bottom vents.
Edit:2 (On 20% off sale till 9/12) probably the best case for ventilation and airflow for the price in the $50 range

Just run it with an open side panel that should solve the heat issues. As for dust I would probably just attach a mosquito net over the hole left behind by taking of the panel.

OMG you were almost right. The box fan doesn't help much but an air cooler does.

here's how it looks when i remove the side panel and put in an air cooler(http://images03.olx.in/ui/14/14/33/1351265044_450171133_1-Pictures-of--Kenstar-Air-cooler-New.jpg)

http://postimg.org/image/6si9mqe9j/

I swithched off the air cooler and temps rose to 85 in 2 minutes... switched it on again, temps came back to 73-74

You could fit a 220mm side fan instead of a window in the side panel , I did that once and it worked a charm and with a bit of patience and a set of needle files it can end up looking very good

Case doesn't really matter as much as you guys claim as long as it has atleast a 120 intake and a 120 exhaust. I've had good and bad temps in all kinds of cases. Its all about the cooler and the thermal paste application. Also just slap a 200mm fan on the side window and call it a day. Throw a 90mm but ultra thick server fan on the back like a san ace denki to compensate for the only a 90mm exhaust.
