Graphics card issue?

Lately I've been seeing some artifacts pop up from time to time. It's happened more than once. Basically what happens is a bunch of red pixels appear scattered all over the screen. They seem to like to hang around edges of things. Could this be a video card issue?

sounds like it. undo/lower your OC, and check your cooler/ramsinks for issues.

Also Pull out your GPU and re seat it. Ive seen artifacting just from bad connection on the PCI-E slot coursed by dust maybe.

There is no OC on the card (I tried at one point, didn't have good luck). It's happened in game (really only been playing spiral knights lately, a cartoony Java based game, shouldn't put much stress on the gpu) and while watching something with windows media player. The cooler should be fine, temps aren't bad. I remember reseating it since I've had the issue, cleaning dust out of stuff. Maybe it is time for a new card... the 5870 is an aging beast anyway.

your little cartoony game could be providing a really weird load - for example, if its running at 400FPS because its so low horespower, it could cause overheating in weird places on the graphics cards (like how furmark burned out VRM's)

Reseat your card and boot into Windows, go to Theme and change the theme a few times try black and other colours, if it happens here the card is stuffed, RMA it.

what on earth woudl changing the theme do? how could that be considered a test of any kind?

It's not a test, the red artefacts show up on the different colour backgrounds. Trust me it works.
