AMD Posts Catalyst 13.9 for Windows 8.1 and Catalyst 13.10 Beta

AMD posted Catalyst 13.9 WHQL software suite, which is logo-certified for Windows 8.1, and Catalyst 13.10 Beta for everyone else. Catalyst 13.9 Windows 8.1 driver is logo-certified (i.e., it complies with the newest Windows Display Driver Model 1.3), yet the it isn't quite WHQL-certified. You're at the very least assured that the driver will make your hardware work on Windows 8.1, and support Direct3D 11.1 on compatible Radeon HD 7000 series, HD 8000 (OEM) series, and the upcoming Rx 2xx series hardware. Direct3D 11.1 should get its first major outing with Battlefield 4.

Catalyst 13.9 for Windows 8.1 supports all AMD Radeon GPU families since HD 5000 series, and integrated graphics for all APUs AMD ever sold. The new Catalyst Control Center requires .NET 4.5 runtime environment. Moving on, Catalyst 13.10 Beta is being released to users on older operating systems. It brings game-specific performance improvements, including 20% performance scaling on Rome Total War 2 for CrossFire setups and display corruption issues associated with it; 20% performance scaling on Saints Row 4 for CrossFire setups; and 10% performance scaling on Metro: Last Light for CrossFire setups. Frame-pacing (fluidity) is improved for six games, including Tomb Raider (2013), Metro: Last Light, Sniper Elite V2, World of Warcraft, Max Payne 3, and Hitman: Absolution. The driver also fixes a bug that spools down PCIe link speeds of secondary graphics cards in CrossFire setups down to x1, when idling.

Beta drivers or bust. Seems like every "logo", "WHQL" or "official non-beta" driver they release is way behind the beta driver. I know it takes a lot of time to certify a driver to not give your computer a BSOD, but I stopped using official releases quite a while ago.

Ok, I'm confused. Are all the performance improvements of 13.10 beta present in 13.9 or is it just a subset of those features? I downloaded the Windows 8.1 RTM from the MSDN and I don't want to install it yet if I have to roll back my graphics drivers to do so.

Just wondering.

I personally am not interested in 13.9 WHQL because i'm on Win 7 + Crossfire, still enjoying the frame pacing support and the latest crossfire optimizations as well as the additional performance improvements and fixes found in AMD Catalyst 13.10 Beta.

Hmmm, odd, before they were making it sound like the frame pacing/latency issue was specific to Crossfire. Now they mention it as specific to certain games, with no mention of being Crossfire specific.

I also find it odd that none of the games mentioned for it are ones I had noticeable frame drops with, except for a bit of stuttering in LL. Also no mention of it reducing stuttering in games known for it, like Bioshock Infinite.

I'll probably try it anyway though, since at least now they give us some kind of verification it doesn't just improve Crossfire frame stability.

Just noticed this allows me to play SC Blacklist without having to use the same res as my desktop. Before if I did that the SMI map wasn't interactive. Nice.

Im having a weird issue with these new drivers 13.9. Some times when I open up firefox it pushes my second GPU to 100% :S and wont go back down unless i close firefox, but when reopen it goes back to 100%, doesnt happen all the time but it does happen a good 50% of the time.

Yes that's a bug in Catalyst. I suppose you have your cards overclocked via Overdrive.
Only way to solve this is disabling ULPS.

[In case you wonder]
How to disable ULPS:

Regedit > select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - > SYSTEM
Hit Ctrl+F (= find), type in
EnableUlps
and hit Enter
each instance you find (F3 for the next search), change the value from 1 to 0.
(Do not touch EnableUlps_NA)
Reboot the PC for the changes to take effect.
