To the OP,
I would lean more on the MSI than the HP but I would also take this into consideration... that 8970M is going to be gimped by that A10. It is not going to do Hybrid X-fire and the CPU really can't keep up with that GPU. I believe Anandtech and another site, I want to say, Hardwarecanucks both reviewed that unit and had the same results. The HP is actually more balanced but that GPU is more of a mid range GPU. HP does not use MXM GPU modules in their units just in case you ever wanted to upgrade it later. If you could get by with a 15 inch laptop, there is more balanced units available at similar or better prices.
That AMD APU holds that card back quite a bit. Over that is not a bad deal but I would look at something more balanced for a $1225-$1325 system. That GPU alone is about $500 on eBay (from Eurocom) when you upgrade a system.
I would look at something with an i7 and a 675M or possibly a 7970M for more balance. Just my two cents...
**SIDE NOTE** BTW I have noticed alot more laptop questions coming about... I would appreciate as a community if we wouldn't look down on the likes of HP and Dell just because... Laptops are not the custom desktops most of us here have. They are entirely different. As both an ASP for many vendors as well as modifying my own laptop, the vendors are all about equal. They do make good stuff and yes like every company there are those models that are like just... well... duds, every company has them.
Have you ever tried to order a part from ASUS for one of their laptops??? Nightmare, takes 2-3 weeks... Sony... their parts are about 4x more expensive than others... Toshiba and Acer are good value if you need to repair them, the parts aren't ridiculous. HP and Dell two day everything, Apple overnights everything. Work as an ASP or do some research before bashing a vendor..... damn fanboys. **END SIDE NOTE**
