The MSI would be better quality and reliability over the HP. But it would all depend on which one would have the better GPU performance over all? Im not to sure to say if anyone else might know?

Id also look underneath of both machines to see the design to see what has better cooling, better accessibility to the hardware etc

Im very picky when it comes to laptops, I see WAY to many go through me that are Dead!!

Aside from an annoying rattle from the CPU fan buried inside my laptop, it's GREAT!

Does anybody else see the irony?:wtf:

leaning towards the MSI, but I have to get the wife onboard with spending that much. She sees the $399 laptops and wonders why I can't get that... lol

Not trying to be rude, but from the standpoint of an employee at a computer recycling center and repair shop, HP is the absolutely worst in terms of build quality, repairability, and reliability.

Honestly i would see if you can justify spending the extra 250 on the MSI.

A classmate of mine has an MSI very similar to that one. Got hit by a car last week. Laptop was in his pack. It was acting a little odd at first, but no visible signs of damage. Reseated the memory, and all seems to be fine at this point. I'm sure fractures will pop up in the PCB later-on though. I'd vote for MSI on that, and I've had more issues to fix with HP laptops hardware-wise than any other laptop...but maybe that's just because there's more of them out on the market?

I will note that my cheap $379 Asus K55N has been an amazing little laptop...gaming capable at mid to mid-hi settngs most newer games...the AMD APU is sweet! Nothing compared to what you're getting..but I didn't need the power for a homework laptop...just something to let me get my RTS on from time-to-time..play the good games when I get home.

it still works fine, and its only when the laptop is cold/first start up. seriously this is TPU, replacing a fan is not hard.

That's the "can do" attitude and that's why I've been a returning visitor since the 2000's! If ya gotta fix it, then dammit take it apart and fix it! I don't mind getting payed decently to do it for those that don't wanna though. :rockout:

I was just ribbing you a bit BUT, at the same time...a better quality build would include a non-rattling fan.

;)

Just saying what a bunch of others, two? three?, have been saying. HP's are not of the best-est quality standards. I see them all the time, at the pawn shops, real cheap. Next to Acers pulling down good cash.

I had a work PC, briefly, that was an HP. It ran great but, felt cheap. I was always afraid it was gonna break! I hated that job and when I gave them back their HP, they wanted to charge me for scratching the back cover!

Well, I called a friend, a lawyer. End.

To the OP,

I would lean more on the MSI than the HP but I would also take this into consideration... that 8970M is going to be gimped by that A10. It is not going to do Hybrid X-fire and the CPU really can't keep up with that GPU. I believe Anandtech and another site, I want to say, Hardwarecanucks both reviewed that unit and had the same results. The HP is actually more balanced but that GPU is more of a mid range GPU. HP does not use MXM GPU modules in their units just in case you ever wanted to upgrade it later. If you could get by with a 15 inch laptop, there is more balanced units available at similar or better prices.

That AMD APU holds that card back quite a bit. Over that is not a bad deal but I would look at something more balanced for a $1225-$1325 system. That GPU alone is about $500 on eBay (from Eurocom) when you upgrade a system.

I would look at something with an i7 and a 675M or possibly a 7970M for more balance. Just my two cents...

**SIDE NOTE** BTW I have noticed alot more laptop questions coming about... I would appreciate as a community if we wouldn't look down on the likes of HP and Dell just because... Laptops are not the custom desktops most of us here have. They are entirely different. As both an ASP for many vendors as well as modifying my own laptop, the vendors are all about equal. They do make good stuff and yes like every company there are those models that are like just... well... duds, every company has them.

Have you ever tried to order a part from ASUS for one of their laptops??? Nightmare, takes 2-3 weeks... Sony... their parts are about 4x more expensive than others... Toshiba and Acer are good value if you need to repair them, the parts aren't ridiculous. HP and Dell two day everything, Apple overnights everything. Work as an ASP or do some research before bashing a vendor..... damn fanboys. **END SIDE NOTE**

Id also look for both devices to see the style. What has better quality in every aspect, better availability to the components etc.

still leaning towards MSI but the wife isn't on board yet... go figure! thanks for the input, I was trying to show her that there is a difference and you get what you pay for... I hate HP but wanted to show it to her too

just pitching in to say my HP laptop is awesome, and they arent as shit as people say. i do need to replace my CPU fan (it rattles when cold, bad bearing) but the laptop itself is wonderufl.

Yeah I don't see what people are saying about HP being crappy. Unless they have had one of their laptop and they weren't happy with it, they are being led blind. They seem pretty nice, especially some of their higher performing ultra books.

OP: Id go HP. I like the sleeker design of the HPs then the massive boat anchor of the MSI.

because more people buy HP & the masses dont treat their computers properly?

companywise, i vote for BOTH, i'm satisfied with the HP laptops i've tried & mine is an MSI

but look at the specs... 8970m vs 750m? although the cpu & hard drive are better on the envy

another thing to consider is the cooling, i'm not sure how hot that envy gets, while msi is roomy & has a 'max fan' button (i was using that earlier while playing bf4 beta, i7-2670m, gtx 570m)
