Hello TPU member :)

There's a 130$ difference between the 270X [260$] and the 280X [390$] - I am from INDIA.
Is it better to buy 270X now and upgrade in about 15-20 months , because atm both the 270X and 280X are able to max out all games at 1080p and also I don't mind lowering down a few settings in the future games [released next year]

I want to play skyrim with loads of mods , bf 4 , watch dogs , fc3 , Bioshock infinite , tomb raider, sleeping dogs , Full Batman series , just cause 2 , Max Payne 3 and almost all future games @1080p

Will the 270X suffice for the above needs? or should i just go for the 280x [It's my first PC build so i am scared a bit to spend so much money on just one component, also customer service/repair/rma/warranty usually sucks in India hence scared to spend 390$ on 280x]

Also the only 280X i can buy is the Sapphire Dual-X as it's the only one which will fit in my HAF 912 without removing HDD

Please suggest me what should i do.
Also please do not give opinion of any other card [like the 760/7950/7870xt because none of them are available, even if they are they are priced more / very similar to the 280X]

For that much of a price difference, I'd probably go for 270X. The 270X is basically a rebadged HD7950, just like the 280X is a HD7970. There really isn't that much actual performance difference between the two. I don't think the 280X will really last much longer than a 270X.

Thought they were basically a overclocked HD7870

It's more like a 7870XT rebrand because in performance it's almost equal to a 7950 but has 2gb vram and is also based on Tahiti.

But the main point is , is the 280X worth the extra 130$ over the 270X ? Need a few more suggestions/opinions. [Thanks @BarbaricSoul for your input :)]

There is about a 25% performance difference from the 270x to the 280x according to w1zzards review. The same review also shows that the 270x has about 4% more price to performance at least in US dollars.

The 7870xt is a pretty good card. If you don't mind turning some stuff down sometimes it sounds like the card for you. To answer you question, the 270x will suffice. If you do want that 25% performance, the games you mention will use it.

So it gives a 25% increase in performance but costs exactly 50% more. Not worth it right ?

Also haven't been able to see reviews of Sapphire Dual-X versions of the cards as i'm probably going to go for them [they are the cheapest and smallest in size :p]

personally i dont think a 280x is worth the $130 increase in price, but thats just IMO

if you dont mind spending a little extra and you're sure you will not get buyers remorse after buying the 270x, then go for it

Just to clarify....

A 270X is a Pitcairn chip like the 7870 Ghz Edition and the 280X is a Tahiti chip like the 7970
See below:

The cards are basically rebadges

If you need a card, best thing you can do is to buy the best you can afford now and enjoy it.... 15-20 months is an awfully long time to wait.

Oh, so it's a pitcairn core. I'd go for the 280x probably

I have played games on lowest possible setting on 720p for 6years of my life [I'm 17 now and i started gaming when i was 11 lol :p]
So yeah this is my first own pc and my first own graphics card , so i don't think i will get the regret as 280X is priced 150% of the 270X. I could upgrade to a newer gpu soon if i save the 130$ now.

Just a few more suggestions [i dont want to take any risk] and i'll make up my mind :)

A general comment on the dual x cooler. It is good. It is what I used before I went to watercooling on my overclocked 7970(280x) and it was very quite. On a 270x it would be even better.

You are talking about the R9 280 not the R9 280x right?

Because as far as I knew this is how it went as follows:

R9 290x = Totally new GPU
R9 290 = Totally new GPU
R9 280x = Revamped HD7970 Ghz (With improvements)
R9 280 = Revamped HD7950 (With Improvements)
R9 270X = Revamped HD7870 Ghz (with improvements)

And so on....

IMO the R9 280x is a decent way off from the R9 270X in terms of performance. Whether or not it's worth the extra money to you is another difference?
But with 3Gb of ram compared to 2Gb of RAM, also a 384Bit bus over a 256Bit bus, 2048 Shaders vs. 1280 Shaders... I would say a R9 270x will be deemed irrelevant a decent amount longer before a R9 280x would be.

Again enough to spend the extra money ... is always up to the individual and their upgrade schedule.

From here it seems like the 280X is around 30% better than the 270X So is 280X worth the extra 130$?
If i buy the 270X i might upgrade again in around 15-20months , but with the 280X i won't be upgrading because after 2.5 years i'll be in my final year of undergrad college hence won't be playing
