AMD has made available a fresh beta build of the Catalyst 13.11 graphics driver. This latest release is the Beta 9.2 and it brings improved anti-aliasing performance in Call of Duty: Ghost (and an updated CrossFire profile for the game), a PowerTune tweak to 'reduce variance of fan speed / RPM' on Radeon R9 290 Series cards, plus fixes for crashing bugs seen in legacy DirectX 9 applications.

The Catalyst 13.11 Beta9.2 is available for Windows 8.1/8/7 and features support for the Radeon R9, R7, HD 7000, HD 6000 and HD 5000 Series cards.

I had Catalyst 13.11 BetaV8. I started the installation of V9 and the driver was the same version. The only changes were in Catalyst Control Center and the Transcoding.

Well, AMD?

In another word, increase fan speed limit so it stays spinning faster and louder for a longer period of time. But hey we all knew that people who bought the 290 series card don't really care about noise right, so this shouldn't affect them. Maybe they should start shipping ear mufflers or noise cancelling headphones as part of the Never Settle bundle? BRILLIANT!
Are you sane? They're delivering improved drivers, with an updated fan profile so that every brand using the reference card is guaranteed to offer the same performance (not lower).
Btw according to your system specs button you're a GF 680GTX user, so what's it to you, why are you even commenting?

That statement of Tom's is the most bullshit accuse. Here in TPU we already have a retail card reviewed

http://tpucdn.com/reviews/Powercolor/R9_290X_OC/images/perfrel.gif
The article is about a 290, not a 290X....

So like, when did Beta9.`1` came out to begin with?
What brings you the idea that every driver build has to be released to public....

Driver is great! In COD Ghosts my 7970 crossfire performance more than doubled! At max settings*, i had about 37 ~ 42 fps average, now it's 80 ~ 110, (@ 2560 x 1600). Still doesn't make it a good game though. And the fullscreen intros during level loading still stutter enormously during the first half.

  • Aspect Ratio: Auto
  • Screen Refresh Rate: 60Hz
  • Sync Every Frame: No
  • Image Quality: Extra
  • Depth of Field: Yes
  • Screen Space Ambient Occlusion: High
  • Terrain Detail: On
  • Anisotropic Filtering: High
  • Motion Blur: Yes
  • Anti-Aliasing: 4x MSAA
  • Shadow: Yes
  • Texture Quality: Manual
    • Texture Resolution: Extra
    • Normal Map Resolution: Extra
    • Specular Map Resolution: Extra
    • Water Map Resolution: High

So from my view this driver fix works as advertised.

Btw, installing ontop didn't work for me (although i started with restore factory defaults on the current CCC).

So then i uninstalled (AIManager) and then wiped with the AMD uninstall tool to be extra sure. It went flawless.

Oh. And of course, as crossfire user i keep disabling ULPS. I don't check if the issue might be solved by now (waste of time), i just disable it rightaway.

Just more reason to not buy a stock cooled 290/290X.

AMD has the better chip, but it's crippled by that ridiculous stock cooler.

even reference 7970's had cooling issues. I have a gigabyte 7970 and the stock cooler would get so hot it would throttle during games. I have to buy a icy vision cooler to get good temps.

my non-reference sapphire 7970 doesnt even hit 65c, and its on the turbo bios clocked at 1.1GHz.

non reference will solve all these problems.

True, hope to see some decent priced non reference 290 models or some decent priced coolers for reference. I wished my 7970 cooler would work on the 290 non x but from the board layout it looks different.

I discovered that the reference fan profile is designed to stay quiet just before it really gets hot, then it starts with 55% (at 80 °C!)and goes steeply up to 70% or so just before 90 °C.
So i changed that in bios (using the vbe editor), to go 55% from 60 °C going gradually up, now gpu1 hardly ever reaches 82, gpu2 (always 10 degrees cooler than gpu1), 72 max. Overheat is not possible this way.

Do these help on battlefield 4?
What was with BF4 performance?
From what i remember it was already fine (on 7970 crossfire), but maybe it's improved (i dunno): in level replay i now get about the same figures as in COD~Ghosts.
At max settings (All = Ultra; 4 x MSAA; Antialising Post = High; Ambient Occlusion = HBAO), 2560 x 1600 about 60 ~ 110. At level start looking at the open terrain with vehicles, mercs, burning choppers i see it dip to 52, then up to 85 depending on the viewing angle.

Even setting the fan profile above 80% would still throttle (just not as much) Temps would hit 90's. I had to sit a 120mm fan on the back side of it to game while my cooler was being shipped. New cooler at 100% load and OC'ed doesn't go over 57 deg.

What was with BF4 performance?

Performance in terms of graphical glitches, random spikes, and GFX crashes.

After much thread cleaning... If you want to talk about the physical aspects of this video card, there are many other 290x threads to crap in. We do not need the same arguments being vomited over and over again in every AMD thread that pops up.

Thank you.

Been trying the new driver since installing my new R9 290 last night.

Experiencing system hang when viewing any streaming video. Very odd.

I hear your pain, I gave up with the last driver due to a total ssystem bug out. Had to do a clean os install and used the 13.11 b6 I believe and things couldn't be smoother and my issue with the 2nd gpu ramping up to full clocks when I open a browser is gone.. it just sits at 300/150mhz when open and shuts down when the browser is closed so win win for me.
