I've been on amd cards since I build this pc 2 years ago and with my recent purchase of a 1440p monitor which will be here Wednesday I feel I should make the jump up from my 7950 to a top of the top tier card.

My eyes have been on the line of 780's but I'm completely new to NVidia so I really don't know what cards are the best, which ones I should watch for sales on during the coming holiday spending spree. A friend of mine suggests MSI over anything else while another suggests EVGA so I'm torn in knowing who to go with.

I'd love to get a 780TI but I lack 700$ to drop and I don't own a credit card that can even cover that high of a purchase unfortunately.

My wishes are to get a solid 780 that overclocks well.

I also considered it but decided against it but would it be a better idea to try out a different card in SLI rather than the single 780.

After spending a ton of time comparing 1440p monitors for a week or so I'm dreading sitting and comparing gpus as well while also juggling ideas for other planned upgrades so any and all suggests would be very much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Many people I know that have attempted crossfire setups have run into nothing but issues. While I'm sure there are plenty of people who have had success I'd rather not risk it.

I feel I'd also be better off selling the 7950 now and getting what I can from it rather than CFing and waiting it out, and having them be worth even less once I upgrade again down the road.

I could get 150 - 175$ now and bring my 780 price down to around 400$ - whatever sale prices might be.

I guess get the 780 then. You might find though in games like BF4, that a single 780 wont be quite enough to run the game at Ultra with some AA at 1440p though(Depends on your game performance preferences. I like being above 60fps at pretty much all times in games like BF. ) I have a 780 now, and planning to get another when I go up to 1440p.

I've been contemplating the idea of going SLI with 2 780's as well. Buy one now, another later on.

I'm willing to sacrifice levels of AA as I've read multiple cases of people still seeing improvement even with AA lowered in 1440p over 1080p.

For me its just knowing which manufacturers 780's will be the best OCers. As I said I'd love to get a TI but just can't drop 700$ at once, but OCing a 780 alone should be able to reach stock TI performance.

It will, my 780 currently at 1150 boost clock matches, and beats a stock 780ti, and Im not even clocked to the max on this card yet. Waiting for my water block to come.

This 780 uses the new B1 stepping GK110 GPU which is said to overclock a bit better. It also allowed Nvidia to even release the GTX780ti as a full fledged GK110 chip to consumer market.

GIGABYTE GV-N780OC-3GD REV2.0 GeForce GTX 780 3GB ...

The GTX780 Classified from EVGA is known as the best 780 available when it comes to overclocking as well.

Ive seen a lot of love for the EVGA classified. So would it be the best choice over say the MSI Twin Frozr (highly recommended by a friend).

If I can spend the little extra for the EVGA and get better OC potential I'd be very happy.

The 780 is a good choice, especially if you can't afford the 780 Ti.

I'd recommend one with a custom cooler on it that isn't much more expensive than a stock one which you can overclock hard without killing it. You'll then approach the performance of a stock 780 Ti, along with lowish noise levels and have a great card.

NVIDIA cards are excellent and I really like the driver control panel. I've had hardly any issues with them in the four years I've had them. Some people have an equally good experience with AMD though, despite all the driver issues being reported. I still prefer NVIDIA and like having the choice of 3D Vision and soon, G-Sync.

I don't think you could go wrong with a 780 and a decent cooler. Personally, I have 7950 in crossfire and haven't had any problems at all. I have 30+ of the most recent and graphically demanding games and they will easily max out all of them at 60fps 1080, so 1440 should be ok too (except maybe Crysis 3). You could get a second one for $200 and together they exceed the performance of a 780.

the Twin Frozr 780 is a reference 780 with a different cooler. If I were in the market for a 780 right now, it would be the Classified.

An AMD r9 290 (non x) is $400.00 and is getting great numbers with beta drivers and no Mantle. That's what id get. Although as of right now there is only ref. card available. In a few weeks we'll see aftermarket coolers on em.

I really wanted the 290 - 290x to be my next buy but with the temp and fan sounds on the reference I've opted not to give them a try. The custom cooler models will of course be better but I'm getting my 1440p monitor within the next couple days and I'm looking to upgrade now rather than later.

I think for me, I've owned both a 6970 and now 7950. First card was great, my 7950 has artifact and tearing issues however. I'm mostly just looking to jump ship and give NVidia a try. I now have money to spend on the price premium for cooler and quieter and that's the direction I'd like to take for now. If i'm not happy I already have a background in AMD cards and would know what to look for. Suppose my choice of going for a 780 is mostly just wanting to explore and test the waters.

Its seems like the EVGA 780 Class will certainly be my choice of card after looking into it further and comparing with other cards like the MSI twin and lightning. Whether I SLI in the future or not will I suppose depend on my single card performance on 1440p.

I've got multiple other upgrades planned over the next month for this pc as well, this is just the last big money item besides the monitor so I would like to get it "right" the first time =).

If you are looking for the best overclocking 780 the general consensus is the EVGA classified is the card to get. They are amazing quality, have a custom PCB and allow overvolting without having to flash the bios. If I hadn't gone with a pair of 780ti's (also from EVGA) I would have been getting the classified, I just didn't want to wait for a 780ti classified to launch...

Wait for 290X AIB cards, they might be a better/cheaper alternative.

That and it's possible the new aftermarket cooler versions of these also come with factory OC which could help bring down the 780 Ti's price as well as the other 780s.

If that happens, it will be a glorious day for prospective buyers, from either side :toast:

Well, there's a lot of good options when you talk about video cards, but for 1440p gaming i suggest you to buy R9 280X and make a CF, or even a GTX 770 in SLI would allow you to play at very high frames and stable.

No, just no. Like he said, he doesn't want to do crossfire. and a 280x is a rebranded 7970, he could just get another 7950 and overclock both to the sky to beat out 7970/280x crossfire setup, but he already stated he does not want to do that, nor does he want to wait for board partners to release non reference 290/290x card designs. So really his best option is to go with the best possible 780 he can get right now which is the classified, then get another later for SLI, if he wants to, by then there should be a lot of second hand used ones on the market for good prices, and maybe another retail price drop (but doubtful)

I'm no hardcore PC gamer by any means, but in my experience 1440P in terms of gaming is overrated.

If you've already splurged on a high end monitor though you might as well take it all the way and grab an EVGA 780Ti Classified. No half measures.

He said he didn't want to wait for the 780Ti Classified since he is getting the screen sooner then the 780ti classified will be out, and wants to get the card capable of driving the screen at the same instance.

I'd take long term performance over short term satisfaction. Deal with the current card while waiting for the Ti, acquire additional funds, and secure the best possible performance for the long term.

Nothing wrong in upgrading in steps and it beats wishing you had a little extra performance when your 780 is struggling to maintain ~40 FPS when pushing all those pixels.

i would also wait to get more funds for a ti or to see what happens with the custom 290s

what's the rush, a month of using the 7950 on 1440p shouldnt be a big deal & a lot of games wont be THAT bad on it, you get to see how urgent the need for the jump would be

this is especially if the plan is to keep the new card for several years

Correct, it won't. I've been using a 7970 with 1440p for a year now and it's been great. As much as I would love a new video card, I just don't feel like I need one.

You're a PC enthusiast, of course you need a new graphics card. ;)

I also use common sense. 290x is too hot, 780ti is too pricey. I'd rather wait for 20nm as 28nm seems to be getting stretched thin.

I don't really call myself a PC enthusiast... Not anymore. My focus is more on the games than the hardware. :)
