I know the 270xs are going fast due to the litecoin mining, same as I'm gonna do also with gaming, its my everyday machine. I will have the cash Monday and I know the 270x is a re branded 7870 basically thats o/c and has dx11.2. Is it worth the extra few bucks and getting the 270x now or save it and get a 7870? Just thought I'd get your guys 2 cents :)

I'll also probably snag a PSU from someone here if they have one that is about 600W+ with 2 or more 6+2 pin pcie. Later thread....

Thank You!

You could also get an R9 270 it's the same as the R9 270X just worse binned(100mv more for the same frequency).

I'd get the 7870 if it's less expensive. Like you said, they are basically the same.

Plus, IIRC, HD7000 generally OC's better than R9.

i gotta ask, are miners simply going to newer hardware for power savings ratios? the 5xxx cards i have been picking up for next to nothing on here and ebay churn out as good or better KHS numbers as the newer stuff and even with the power consumption factored in my ROI is measured in days or weeks, not months or more like some of the guys in my area who just invested 400$ EACH on brand new R9 series stuff that is only pumping out marginally better KHS numbers.

i know a lot of people game on their systems also (i have a single dedicated miner so i do not) and if that is a consideration i could see a R9 being a (slightly) better choice.

and the reason for this, while seeming off topic, is to possibly recommend an older, cheaper, but still good performing card, depending on your goals.

If I picked up another psu to replace the one i have, i can set up a dedicated miner with my old card which is a 5750 which gets ~165 kh/s. Not great but all day is about 3600 shares. I know a r9 or a 7870 will pump more out but both together will be better lol.

pick up a used 5870 for half or less than the cost of a 7870 and get the same hash rate as a 7870?

Everyone keeps saying that the 7870 and 270X are basically the same. While hardware wise, this is mostly true, there are a couple of important differences you should note.

#1, better GDDR5 RAM in a 270X. It goes from 1200MHz (4.8GHz effective clock rate) which has a memory bandwidth of 153,600MB/sec in a 7870 to the 270X version which has a 1400MHz memory clock (5.6GHz effective clock rate) which has a memory bandwidth of 179,200MB/sec. That extra 25,600MB/sec the 270X gives you will do a LOT for your gaming, period. Since the mining is memory intensive, it is really going to improve that dramatically as well.

I've been researching all the cards from AMD this last week, and have set up a card comparison in an excel spreadsheet, which includes the cost I can get the card from Newegg.com. Right now, I can get a PowerColor R9 270X for $189.99US with free shipping, or a HD 7870 for $149.99+$6.05 shipping. Using formulas to calculate the performance of the cards, taking into account power consumption of each card and what my cost/KW hour is in my area of the US, I have calculated the first year cost of ownership (including purchase price), and have yielded a Performance/$ ratio. Using that Performance/$ ratio, the 7870 came out on top, barely. I mean barely. However, when I include how much extra $ per year I can earn with the 270X over the 7870 by mining, the 270X comes out ahead for the first year, again, barely.

Bottom line, close call. In the long run, the 270X will more than pay for itself if you make wise use of it, faster than the 7870 will. Also, the 270X will handle newer DirectX titles and newer OpenGL titles without sacrificing features those titles bring in. For that reason, and that reason alone, I have decided on the 270X, since all other things are pretty much equal. You see, I don't want to spend money upgrading to a DirectX 11.2 card later. :)

270X prices have begun to drop. I have also decided to wait a couple more months to monitor the price drop to try to get it at the best time. Because of the market saturation with the mining, the mining has become less profitable per card, and this makes the price of the 270X less attractive to miners. As more people get into the mining, the card price will continue to drop. Expect a good drop comparable to the 7870 within the next several months. My opinion from the exhaustive research I have done this week. May not be worth anything, but there you have it. Exhaustive in this case doesn't mean necessarily complete, but in my case "lack of sleep due to staying up too long researching it." If you want to be sure, do your own research on it.

Very good advice with taking everything into consideration. I wasn't considering the memory difference and it's impact on mining results when I made my suggestion. Honestly, I don't know how well the 7870 mines, and I'm not surprised the 270x beats it. I am curious how the two cards compare in mining while at the same clock speeds.

Well, surfing around on Newegg and it seems the 270s are about the same price as the 7870s so Imma just go for a 270. Thanks all!

So I ended up ordering one today: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129281

Not exactly the one I wanted but the lifetime warranty and 2 DVI ports is what really drew me for my needs. Never used VisionTek so, fingers crossed lol. The cards I was looking at went super fast and the one I was about to buy, a 270x 4gb for $175, sold by the time I dug my car out of the drifting snow and got my new debit card activated... Damn Ohio winters! :p But it will be better than my HD5750 I got on a steal of a deal lol

I also did the PSU calc. to make sure this card would be fine. 386w min. and 436w max. so my Silverstone 500w SHOULD be fine.

I must say, I really am impressed with the card. Plays BF4 at Ultra ~65 FPS and drops to about ~40 FPS in "heavy" zones. Just need a new PSU, mobo and processor and I'll be happier! lol
