Oven Mode cook my card O_O

I have baked my original release PS3 Phat's board 5 times now. She just keeps coming back. It can be done but has to be done right.

I understand that, but when i first did it, i did not want to use a heat gun or the oven as i did not want to heat up the entire board, i just wanted the heat on the GPU, the part that needed it.

Is that mean the problem caused by GPU only? "GPU artifacts" what about memory and other stuff. I mean maybe they want some heat.

my GPU was like this before : photo

In your way i can use Iron cloth, what about that.

Now that is a very interesting thread. For the love of God, tell me what brand this graphic card is!

The reason I'm very highly interesed about this is quite simple - the exploded capacitor is a FAKE capacitor. The piece is a 270uF 16V cap, that is created to be like Nichicon FP (FPCAP to be precise, these are original Fujitsu ones, bought by Nichicon) polymer, but it is not! Very obviously from the wrong marking on the top of it:

I quess that everyone will understand the difference and that Nichicon, nor Fujitsu for that matter, ever used partial cathode marking. Therefore I'm very interesed to know, what manufacture give us clearly bad caps on their products.

As for the replacement caps on the card, there I could make some suggestions easily. Just please confirm the diamater of the caps (d8 or d10? They are probably d8, judging by the Sanyo Os-con 820uF 2.5V caps, but one never know, they coudl be fakes too...) ...

Its called a reflow. They actually have expencive machines that do this. Baking them is really not the best way. With the temps constently goin up and down around a chip the solder cracks. Both on motherboad and GPUs

Yeah and the cheapest such machine I have ever seen was a very old and quite crappy one that got sold for a few hundred euros. Don't remember the name atm, but it had a very VERY bad rep on the internet. Not entirely worth it if you want to keep an old GPU going longer.

yeah, I have burnt my cake ^_^

From those pictures, you put it under the broiler? It looks like it got hot enough to melt solder... not to mention making popcorn out of the capacitors.

Personally, I'd write off the $6 ...and think of it as a $6 lesson. You are going to spend way too much time (and extra money) trying to fix it.

...as for the other parts that come off - well, just solder them back in and hope for best :)

And no, it is not possible to use heat gun on soldering things, you need to solder things precisely and well - nothing like that could be done with heat gun. Check this soldering out:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/posts/3043797/

As for the fakes - I bought mine Nichicon FP in Digikey or in Mouser, so they are geniune for sure. That I solder in my Radeon 9200 card there:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/gigabyte-gv-r9264dh-r9200-and-zalman-vnf100-cooler.171562/

...and the photos confirm how these caps are supposed to look. As for the soldering, I created a guide how to do there:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/how-to-exchange-caps-tutorial.192570/#post-3000109
...so maybe you could use it.

As for the caps, yes, they will definitively cost way more that $6, not to mention postage price. Do NOT buy caps on eBay, you have no guaranty what you are getting. Unless you are OK with that or have professional caps measuring devices (mine does not suffice, caps need to be worked/heated up before the measuring is any way reflecting real-life work, so...) ... Plenty of bad news, eh?

brandonwh64 - Sasqui - guys, don't kill this hobby project :) It certainly will be costy repair, but it could be done and it will be interesting to know, if the baking fixed the artefacts. And for how long... that is another good question.

Anything is possible. Since the card was working before you incinerated it, it sure would be interesting to see if the artifacts are gone after an overhaul.

Reminds me of two quotes by Steven Wright:

Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.

Cross country skiing is great if you live in a small country.

This is amazing. How that happened?

Are solid capacitors really secure? What was the temperature of the card at that moment? :O

You are right, no arguing about it, however my best GFX card is 8600 GT and it even need some repairs that may, or may not go well. So if you can spare some card, that it perhaps less generationgs gone and it can be repaired, then I will welcome it. In Czech republic :)

brandonwh64 -
The challenge out weighs the benefits

No question about it, but I would take the challenge, if someone can supply the postage price :)

Mohammed - you are welcome. Thank you very much, now I know that ECS is willing to use fake polymer caps, pretending to be Nichicon FP ones, but they are clearly (at least for me) not. It will be interesting to know the temperature of your owen, because these caps should handle a bit of heat. Not too much, but a bit more that they are made for operation (105°C) for sure...
For example Nichicon FP R5: http://www.nichicon.co.jp/english/products/pdfs/e-r5.pdf
...but they did not say how much more it can take at all :(

Hell, I would send you my old dead 5870 and a air cooler for it if you thought you could fix it and then you would have a newer card. Its either that or I am dismantling it for fun.

It was liquid cooled since it was new, I put a VRM cooler on it too, but it died to a black screen when I launched skyrim, I attempted to use a friends 6xxx series and didn't have the extra power cables to power it up too to see if I could flash it from windows or even see it, so I made a bootable USB stick with atiflash on it and ran the tests blind dumping the results back to text files, it would never see the card, I attempted to jumper pin 1 & 8 on the BIOS chip, and voltage tested it, pin 1 was already showing 3.1V, so I removed it and took the coolers off, the area around the VRM's has been discolored, but I see not other physical damage.

MT Alex had a pair of 5870's that I got so I have cards now, and am awaiting some things to put them both in my system, in the meantime I am running one with the stock cooler, once I get my liquid cooling parts I will ship it to you.

regarding the ECS card, is it possible they bought the caps from a supplier that was lying? on a related note, do you all remember the story of the counterfeit kingston SD cards that were coming out of kingston's very own factory? or when some supplier was sending cardboard heatsinks inside retail intel cpus to newegg?

as for these artifacts/baking, maybe i should try?

the lines stay in the same spot based on resolution (minus little wiggling artifacts like the black spots on the 5th pic)

i was thinking 1 vram chip went bad, but could it actually be the core? i also just got a new idea when reading this thread, if i start bending the pcb, do you think the artifacts will change position?

it's a 4870x2 that died while playing limbo (very light gpu usage) last june, it was about an hour into the game, suddenly there was a light flicker & the whole system froze, i restart, continue playing, freezes again after a couple min, then i start seeing the artifacts every other restart, eventually all restarts have the artifacts

originally i thought i damaged it a few days earlier when i was changing cases, since i killed an x800xtpe after handling it, same symptom of bsod when the driver loads, minus artifacts (i switched cases on 2 comps so both cards were handled by me on the same day, 4870x2 is reference, x800xtpe has a zalman vf900-cu with its ram sinks)

i suppose it's still a possible coincidence that the 4870x2 had a natural failure, it's been in use since september 2008, target ~90degrees

4870x2's are getting old bro. try considering selling it and chucking in something more sparkly and power hungry. like a dual 8 pin device on pci-ex 3.0 dual bandwidth. i had a gtx690 incoming until the postal service stole it from me enroute to delivery from a second state. it was even used and they still took it. i got it used because I wanted my parts asap and delivery was 5 days from a private seller here when I would have waited 3 weeks overseas. never doing that again. >.< I was so skanked at the seller. reported them and everything. ebay did 0+1-1=0 >.< I have been on a spending spreee on ebay since august 2012. getting multiple items every week from all over planet earth really. when my ram from italy arrived before my gtx from queensland I was IN a RAGE. :DDDD since buying online I have had two items go missing totally at 1500$ worth the card was 900 and I ordered a neuro headset which strangly dissappeared as well. And another item of undisclosed nature I will not go into.

I "am" bald from start to finsih. +1 to the saviour mods who dedicate their lives to saving peeps from burning their new hardware cooking stuff at explosive heat waves. I am still "bald"ing.

save the MODS
