Hey everyone, first of all this is my first post here at Techpowerup so i apologize if this is the wrong section.

Lately i've been thinking of upgrading my aging graphics card.

I have been looking to buy 2nd hand GTX 670's to run in SLI or 2nd hand 7970's to run in crossfire which are looking pretty sweet now with Mantle comming up soon.

Main games i will be playing will be.

Battlefield 4
Star Wars - The Old Republic
The Secret World

One game i also know i will play when it's released is the new Battlefront game.
So i'm more inclinded to go with the 7970's due to it and battlefield 4 will have
mantle but is it worth the extra money?

I've had some bad experiences with crossfire in the past microstutter and such but i've heared most of it have been dealt with when it comes to the HD7000 series cards, true or false?

Please, i don't want this to turn into another Nvidia vs AMD fanboy fight i've seen enough of those on other forums. Both have their up's and down's.

TLDR; Need help chosing between GTX 670 SLI and HD7970 Crossfire.

Bad time to buy AMD. Price is highest Ive seen it in a long time. A little over a year ago I bought my second 7950 for $180 new. Of course I paid $420 for the first one when it was released. As far as Crossfire problems. Ive had nothing but joy from these cards. Really just get the best deal you can and don't worry about what team

In terms of performance, you'd definitely be better off with dual 7970's. While many complain of issues with crossfire, I owned a pair of 7970's for over a year and a half and only ever had one issue and that was while running crossfire with WoW, but I mean, the game is 10 years old so. This was also the only reason I upgraded, the cards are still beasts. As Jetster said though, they are definitely a lot more expensive than before, but it seems that most PC components are getting more expensive anyway.

These are the ones I had and I can definitely vouch for them, they ran very cool, quiet and over-clocked superbly - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150632

mantle is not sweet... g-sync is.
wow so constructive... G-sync need a specific monitor to work with a proprietary "circuit" ... Mantle on the opposite need coding and implementation (ofc mantle is proprietary but you don't need to buy a new monitor with no tube of lube include to make the price of that new jewel pass) ... both are interesting tech

Please, i don't want this to turn into another Nvidia vs AMD fanboy fight i've seen enough of those on other forums. Both have their up's and down's.
thanks ... i got both brand in equal number and : they trade blows ...

well if your choice are 670 or 7970 it would probably (if the price were not inflated because of cryptocurrency) 7970(or ghz ed...) because a 670 isn't the 7970 counterpart, technically.

770 is the counterpart of the 7970/R9-280/280X (the 770 is a 680 2.0 if we can say that ... ) i think in switzerland we don't have high price on Radeon i find some 7970ghz 2nd hand at 180-220chfs and 770 are between 289-389chfs (2nd hand and news)

i play SWTOR xD on a 460 GTX HAWK atm since i had to sell my 770 ... ahah (waiting on my R9-270 )
BF4 was smooth on my 770 and 7950 (crossfire of GTX580 Matrix Platinum 1.5gb no sweat either)

Personally, just because of the 7970 $400 price tag in my location right now, I suggest the 670 sli solution. If you can get 7970 in your area for within $20 apiece of 670 costs, get the 7970 crossfire. The crossfire problems are fixed(or at least as fixed as they are going to get).

What really sucks, I sold my 7970 for $225 right before the prices exploded.

Yea i know the 670 isnt the 7970 counterpart but had a pretty nice offer to buy 2 Gigabyte GTX 670 4GB OC.

Just been looking into amd alternatives mostly due to mantle and 7970/7970GHZ looks pretty darn nice.

i see then yes 670 4gb are viable ... that or 760

also don't forget that the R9-280/280X are 7970ghz 2.0 (if i can say so ... :D) so compare the pricepoint of each and do as BarbaricSoul recommend

100, 1000 or 100000 fps with yours 60hz panel) and 30 fps limits ingame? DD okay go go, but the main thing is ... mantle - a fake.
G-sync is way to the reality. Its up to you... real smoothness or overlimited laggy fps?

Me too. Had we just waited a very little time, we could have fetched a sexy ticket price! :banghead:

But the 7970s were terrific cards and I had no real issues to speak of, so OP if you can find a few at a fair price, grab them!

I was lucky, I got $300 for each of my 7970's, not too bad.

EDIT: I also don't know why you guys are comparing G-sync and mantle, they're completely different technologies, It's like comparing my 4930k with my 750gb SSD XD

EDIT: I also don't know why you guys are comparing G-sync and mantle, they're completely different technologies, It's like comparing my 4930k with my 750gb SSD XD

Old Chet apparently likes to give fanboy advice whether it's right or not. I've already made him look like he doesn't know what he is talking about several times, as recently as this morning. Ignore him until he starts to actually give good advice.

No, it means they are asking for valid advice with solid reasoning behind said advice. He's not looking for "get NVidia, they l33t" advice.

Oh, so you come back to the thread, edit your post after already making another posting, and try to sneak in a unanswered reply. Don't do that. I'll catch it.

So let me ask you, where did you even mention anything about Nvidia in that thread?

what???))) Are you serious?? Wtf you mean you can`t overclock 290x?! its sounds like "I jumped from the bridge - I am a bird". 100$ And you are GPU KING! This is not just 15% performance or more, this is The BIGGEST 15% of all 15% that you can gain from overclocking any GPU!
Besides, 290 is hotter, for silence purposes additional 100$ is nothing.Anyway you can try to justify 290 vs 290x, to the point, when OP will tell us about his budget. :)
.

You claimed that the 290x is worth the extra $100 over the 290, even after I showed how there was only a 1 FPS difference between the two cards while both cards are OC'ed.

You claimed the 290 is the hotter of the two cards, even though they have the same cooler and the 290x runs at faster speeds.

You then claimed the 290x was the single GPU King. Again, WRONG!!!! The OC'ed GTX 780ti cards own that title. And honestly, being a Nvidia fanboy, you blew my mind with that statement. That was the first time you would have been correct with your fanboy statements.

Face it man, you don't know WTF you are talking about.

OP asked for amd so 290x is a king there, dont bother by this. You entered with nvidia title to the thread where no one waiting for your 780 ti % of performance. Nvidia is just another world of best hardware. Main thing was your opinion that 290 is better than 290x in all, so my point is not the same. But we'll decide this next time, when more non-ref amd gpu`s with "exact the same htsnk" ,as you bolded, will be tested.

I never said the 290 was better. Let's get things straight. What I did say is that with the performance you can get from a 290 after OC'ing it, compared to what performance the 290x gives after being OC'ed, the 290x is not worth an extra $100 more than the 290. There is a difference there.

Look, I've been on TPU for over 6 years and have no plans on going anywhere. I'm not trying to intentionally pick on you or give you a hard time, that is not why I come here. But, and this goes for anyone, if I see you giving bad advice, I will call you out and make you look bad.
