Any new games for 2014 that will challenge current hardware?

I disagree. Upgrading to a Haswell i7 would be quite a noticeable improvement for any games you play.



Assuming it gains any traction which is looking unlikely at this point. BF4 only saw slight improvements on the high end with Mantle, and Thief was the only other game using it and as far as I know that was delayed and yielded only slight improvements. Mantle is also only helpful (from what tests show) for people with low end CPU's like APU's and Pentium's/i3's.

As for the OP, if you're using a Q6600 still you're bottlenecked to high hell. Haswell would yield massive gains over that. Hell, even Sandy Bridge for me was a huge performance jump in CPU-bound games.

Made a similar jump myself; Q9550 @ 3.4GHz to 3770 (non-K) and it made a huge difference. Obviously the 3770 is limited by locked multiplier, but can get an extra 400MHz out of it.

I've been using 560Ti for 3 years and ready to replace it with 280X or GTX770.
But no, most games (every game I like actually) still run fine on 1920x1080 (I'm not graphic whore and not competitive player, usually I just want 2x AA or FXAA and high texture).
Guess I'll wait for a while.

If you want to challenge your HW right away, use 120hz display and try to achieve 120fps. The difference is huge especially in FPS game

i went from a q9550 to a 2500k and only saw an improvement in benchmarks but i had a 1 ghz speed increase over your q9550 with mine.

same again when i went from the 25 to 2600k, only noticed it in benchmarks :/

z87 on the otherhand saw a marked increase in loading times and storage response compared to older chipsets.

Isn't Witcher 3 supposed to be a game with high requirements to max out the graphics? And I think its coming at the end of year, unless they push it back again.

As for CPU power, I had a 4ghz i7 930 and bought a 4930k when they came out. Can't see a noticeable difference in games since the i7 930 was handling anything perfectly fine. There's quite a difference on the energy saving though And ofc is faster for simulations I am doing.

The Star Citizen requirements are pretty high. If the game gets released that way then it may discourage a lot of gamers from buying it.

Try to play the chapter when you enter in the mountain where the aliens are... Max out all your settings...

The worst was getting on the aircraft carrier deck at the end. All the fires and objects in motion made the FPS plummet. I think I lowered the settings for that part because I needed it smooth.

There's a belief that because most games are GPU-bound the CPU doesn't matter and you can get by with a lower end one and a beefy GPU. While this may be true for some games, I would imagine any game that is optimized to be GPU-bound is probably decently optimized for CPU's, and will still benefit from an i5 over an i3 or something to that degree. I went from a Q6600 and a HD5850 to a i5-2500K and HD5850, and in a lot of games my FPS doubled, and gameplay was noticably smoother. I can only imagine how massive the improvement would be going from a Q6600 to an i5-4670K.

The difference between a 2500K and 2600K is very minimal, but the Q9550 to 2500K should have been noticeable. It's entirely likely that without realizing you just upped settings.

Yet, despite it's age looks nearly photorealistic in so many places, where Crysis 3 based engines don't. It was heavy back then and still is because it was so ahead of its time. And you can easily fool anyone by showing him maxed out Crysis 1 and saying it is a 2014 game (for those who didn't know about it).

Funny you mention that. Long ago I remember constantly crashing at that part in the game, and no matter how low I put the settings, game would crash. Then I dropped the difficulty and it played fine, strange lol.

Almost certainly, Witcher 2 even today brings many fairly high-end gpus to their knees when you turn on ubersampling.

I don't recall exactly, but I believe average was in the 40's, with a number of places where it dropped noticeably.

It gets better with newer mods out there now for Crysis 1 too.

My HD5870 was doing solid 60fps at 1600x900 with all on expect ubersampling (15-20fps with ubersampling), then my 7970 could do 60fps at 1200p and 30-40fps with ubersampling at 1200p but sometimes the gameplay didn't feel smooth (I guess frametime issues?)

I'd expect Wolfenstein/Doom4 to run pretty well on most hardware if it is anything like other Id games. Rage (also IdTech5 engine) didn't run great on AMD stuff at release, IIRC but I think thats all been fixed, it runs fine on my Nivida. Doom 3 ran great on just about everything in its time period ('04) RTCW ran great as well in its time('01).
