New motherboard issues (Asus P8Z77-V)

I just installed a brand new Asus P8Z77-V motherboard and am having issues booting up. Sometimes it boots fine other times it doesn't. When it doesn't boot I have to unplug the fans one by one until it boots. After I do this I can plug them back in and everything works fine. All my HDD's/SSD are being read and all fans show what RPM they run at. When I press the power button the green LED on the board lights up, I can hear my External HDD start turning, the fans all start to spin for a split second, lights on the case blink and then the fans stop spinning and nothing. So I go through the process with unplugging the fans until it starts up. It even reads all my ram and I don't have my graphics card installed yet. I have my SSD set to AHCI and plugged into the intel SATA6 port. I have even installed all the drivers and programs from the disc.
Is this a faulty motherboard just bugging out? Should I RMA it?
I am typing this and my computer is running great right now once it's up!

I just checked and Asus has a much new BIOS available. Could that be the problem?

If you are OCing... try it without. Reset the BIOS to default.
Run a memory test on the memory or try it with one stick at a time.
Try another PSU (if you can) or check the outputs on the one you are using with a meter.

Also, you may want to try uninstalling/removing all devices and booting; if it boots ok, then, add a device and test again. Repeat with the next device. And, so, on.

Does it say anything about addressing that issue, possibly, in the release notes.

After looking, it might... What BIOS version is your board on?
Is it a Asus P8Z77-V and no Pro, LK, LX, or Deluxe version?

If your version is earlier than 1908; it states it fixed a "1.Fixed Power On By RTC function failed."
Which is a possible problem... Just info, RTC is Real Time Clock.

"The RTC keeps track of the second, minute, hour, day, month, and year and also is responsible for making sure all the signals sent between the devices are sent at the right intervals."

No overclocking, I will try running the mem test right now. It is the standard P8Z77-V.
I just updated the bios to version 2104. But it was a much earlier version before, early 2012.

I didn't run the memost test but I did take each module out and attempt boot but still nothing. I unplug a few fans and it boots.

Since I installed my new fans there was a burning smell that went a way after about a day. Through reading through different causes I assumed it was the fans breaking in. Never did I think to check the cables. (out of site out of mind) And with the motherboard acting up with fans installed. Well now I know why....

This is what I assume is the extension cable that goes from the fan LED connector on the fan itself to the Molex adapter that comes with the fans. I don't know if I had them hooked up wrong (+/- switched). I am so thankful that I caught this because this could have ended up really bad! So as of right now I don't have my LED's on the fans hooked up but that ok. There was not really any instructions on hooking the LED's up with the included connectors.

Good catch - this shows how easily one simple connection could bring down an entire system (like if this thing had caught fire). Your Asus board didn't even lose the fan header - good short protection, wouldn't let it boot and possibly cause real damage. I love Asus boards, I have the same P8Z77-V board and 3570K in my main rig. I went back to BIOS 1908 after trying the 2 latest ones and finding that they both made my CPU run hotter at my usual OC (4.5 GHz), in the high 80's/low 90's. A good BIOS version is a matter of trial and error, and Asus doesn't always know if a change will cause other problems, unless they're major, obvious problems. On my Z87-K board, I had an annoying problem with boot time, it would stay on the BIOS splash screen for over a minute, then boot normally and run perfect. Today I found that Asus had finally released a new BIOS file, so I updated from 1103 to 1201, and now the splash screen only shows for half a second. Now I can quit worrying that the board has a problem, Asus is on top of it.
