I just installed 6 new BitFenix spectre pro fans into my case and ever since I turned my system on they have made my case smell. I also flipped my PSU over. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it.

This will be fun.

From synthetics point of view, strawberry smell is almost same as burned rubber. Just the intensity. :D

Almost like a burning smell. I'm assuming it's possibly some of the bearings breaking in.... Everything is running fine on my computer, all my temps are fine nothing out of the ordinary there. The smell is strongest when they first start up and gets weaker as they continue to run. I did bump the CPU cooler a bit installing the fans could it be thermal paste? Which I am reapplying today?

Huh... the latter statement is slightly troubling. I would immediately install realtemp and check that, or just go ahead and redo the TIM and see if the smell goes away.

No it cannot be... either it is the plastic, it will eventually dwell out...

maybe there is some sort of oil layer on them, it usually cannot be seen, but that's the one that smells badly.

I think this is what it is. I will apply my new TIM and update.

That is possible I didn't clean it up down there, and there was a bit of dust in the corner.

Here I thought you had new groupies with bad hygiene habits.

Smell could also be storage or shipping related. Ground shipping during summer... (Sniff, sniff)

Since I installed my new fans there was a burning smell that went a way after about a day. Through reading through different causes I assumed it was the fans breaking in. Never did I think to check the cables. (out of site out of mind)

rsz_burnt_cables.jpg

This is what I assume is the extension cable that goes from the fan LED connector on the fan itself to the Molex adapter that comes with the fans. I don't know if I had them hooked up wrong (+/- switched). I am so thankful that I caught this because this could have ended up really bad! So as of right now I don't have my LED's on the fans hooked up but that ok. There was not really any instructions on hooking the LED's up with the included connectors.

Someone on a local website here also complained about those fans from Bitfenix. Same issue as yours. Here's a picture of the wires from his fans:

Could this be it?

Quote from BitFenix Site:
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I connect my Spectre LED/Spectre Pro LED/Spectre Pro PWM LED cables?
There are two cables attached to the fan.
1) There is a 3 pin or 4 pin cable that will connect to your corresponding power source (molex, motherboard, fan controller). This will provide power to the fan blades and to the LED
2) The 2 pin cable has an attached cable loop. This cable is to turn on/off your LED's at your convenience. Do not plug it into a power source as there will be an electrical short and will burn your fan and cables. You can also attach this loop to our Hydra Pro fan controller for on-the-fly LED on/off.

They could do this better by putting a warning in the fan box etc.

Yeah they don't come with instructions or anything. Most people I'm sure would assume exactly what I thought and did. I should not have to look in their frequently asked questions..

At least all of the fans are fully functional and so are the LED's I will just need to find a good solution to power my fan LED's now.
