Hey Guys

I am currently on an x-58 chipset and i am looking to upgrade to a new build Mainly for Gaming and for Vmware Workstation , creating virtual machines for practice .
My power supply is a seasonic Gold-x 750 W , and my Graphics card is Saphire 290 tri-x , so i am good with PSU and VGA .

Case : Corsair 750D / Cooler Master Cosmos SE
I really love the Cosmos but i think it is too small and that i am better off with the corsair .
I would really like to hear your advice on that .
Motherboard : Asus Maximus VII Hero / Gigabyte GA -Z97X Gaming 7 or SOC / MSI Z97 Gaming 7 or Z97 MPOWER .
I like the Asus Hero the most , but i am looking for an advice from someone who is more familiar with these motherboards .
CPU : I7 4770K
Memory : Kingston Hyperx Beast 2x8 GB 2400 MHZ .
CPU cooler : I currently have the Noctua NH-D 14 and i absolutely love it , but i am going for aesthetics too this time so Corsair H90 or Corsair H 105 .

so what do you guys think ?

Thank you

The maximus is a great overall motherboard that has good quality gaming components and is just a fancy board. I love Asus boards but mostly view these series for straight up gaming performance rigs.

The gigabyte SOC would be good if your going for extreme overclocking and has gotten some excellent reviews lately but I have not personally messed with one of the gaming or SOC boards yet.

The MSI boards are good value for money boards in my book. Have not had a single one of these boards comes in dead or with issues and they have always just worked very well.

My advice, if you want the top power house board, get that gigabyte SOC Z97 board. Otherwise I would get the Asus in your shoes.

Thanks for your reply , in that case i think ill take the Hero , since i am not that of an overclocker , if i do it is nothing serious anyway .
any advice on the cases and the CPU cooler ?

Well they both are excellent for overclocking, the SOC is just advertised as being amazing to clock in all senses. All the boards listed would do some real nice clocking since they are Z97, its just a specific feature set with the SOC that gives it alot of extra features for the extreme overclocker.

As far as cases go, I could suggest a couple but its really more up to your preference since you board is a standard ATX board. I personally like the Corsair Obsidian series of cases and the NZXT Phantom series.

As far as a cooler goes, for air cooling I almost always recommend getting a Hyper 212.

If you want liquid, a good one is the Corsair H100i but that would be more for having some decent clocks on your chip (Overclocking). For a smaller radiator, I would go with the Corsair H80 for liquid since you do not plan on overclocking much (If any)

Also if you do not intend to overclock, you would be better off getting the i7 4790 over the 4770k.

Building on what @GhostRyder was saying, for air-cooling, the best budget CPU cooler is the Hyper 212 series, but the Noctua D14 does outperform it. If you're going down the watercooling route, I would suggest replacing the fans on the Corsair units as they are notorious for getting very loud compared to the higher end air coolers.

Case wise, I'm a big fan of the NZXT Phantom series, and I hear good things about the Fractal Design Define and Arc series. Whatever floats your boat in aesthetics and features, go for it.

The NZXT Phantom 630 is everything you could want in a case, but the drive trays were designed by the dumbest guy on their payroll. Don't let that deter you though.

The case pairs up nicely with a Kraken cooler too. The X40 will serve you well on silent mode with a modest overclock.

But like Ryder said, the 4790 is the way to go if you're not going to overclock. If you are, forget the 4790 and the 4770K; slow your roll until Devil's Canyon is released.

Motherboard choices mostly revolve around aesthetics nowadays because there isn't much of a performance differential. Pick your pretty poison.

If the Phantom is not to your liking, give the Phanteks Enthoo Pro a gander.

Enjoy.

Case wise i have decided to go with the Corsair 750d
about the CPU the 4790 and the 4770k will cost the same for me , so i was thinking better get the unlocked one just in case i want to overclock in the future and still it will be nothing serious .
Devil's Canyon will be expensive and for far more serious people then me no ?
about the cooler will it get loud since i will be only gaming and creating virtual machines ? that doesn't really stress the system as long as i can remember .
im thinking Corsair H90 or H105

I don't really know much about the CPU usage and potential performance boost of hyperthreading in Vmware Workstation, but for something like gaming, an i5 4670K/4690K will perform almost exactly the same as an i7 equivalent. Unless you need the use of hyperthreading for the virtual machines, then perhaps you could save some money and buy an i5 instead.

Need some clarification from someone who knows about Vmware Workstation.

Not exactly true when it comes to gaming performance. The i5 will match the performance of the i7, in games that use 4 core or less. The i7 beats the i5 in games that use more than 4 cores.

Thanks for the info. :toast:

See, I'm not quite sure about the performance of hyperthreading, and performance of i7 vs. i5, so thanks! But at the moment, there are few games that truly use more than 2-4 cores, let alone more than four.

Okay - I'm not into the FPS genre, so I'll note that for future reference for builds for people who play a lot of heavy FPS games. Thanks for the info!

Devil's Canyon (4790K) looks like it's going to retail for a 10% premium over the 4770K. Whether that'll hold true in shekels, I can't say.

Considering the out-of-the-box base/boost clock increase and thermally kind design, I think one of them should have your name on it as long as your retailers don't gouge you.

A single 120 or 140mm AIO will be fine for the 4790 or 4770K with a modest OC; stay tuned for the 4790K reviews.

I dont know much about the case, but I will go with Corsair 750D(like the color and design), and for the motherboard, beccause dont think you r going with overclocking, you may want to try msi z97 gaming 7, should be work good with your gaming and work issue. and I will take Corsair H105 for cpu cooler.
