Hey I'm looking to build a budget gaming pc for a mate. His budget is 600 dollars with a bit of give up or down but not too much.
The problem is all the forums I've seen usually pick new egg as there main source, which as far as I've seen, does not ship to australia.
Does anyone have any ideas , builds they may have made to give me a hand and stick to the budget.
The PC will be used for gaming only and as long as it can handle the next few years of gaming he'll be happy.
Optical drive not required, but if you can squeeze one in there it wouldn't hurt

Is your best best for price comparisons for AU prices. They'll list hardware from AU vendors. Next few years of gaming for $600AU doesn't sound very doable if I may say so myself, certainly not high settings on 1080p. Does he already have a monitor etc and a Windows disk?

Yes just need the PC to go with it. Monitor micr keyboards os etc is all accounted for. The budget is just for the PC.

Hello,

Here was the best I could really do for such a low budget. As @RCoon said, it is very hard to do a decent enough build for $600 AU.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/39pCD3

EDIT: You could perhaps go with a cheaper case in order to get an A10-7700K or A10-7850K. They both have better CPU power and GPU, but even then, don't expect to be playing games on High-Ultra settings at 60fps.

My build, which I would say is a decent budget build for 1080p gaming would be around $1000 AU.

you cant fit in about 860$ (w/o additional fans for case) with high mid range parts but that is still 260 away from 600$ target

Sorry if I've been a little vague. I'm not looking for a monster gaming rig. Just enough so he can play the next few years of games. 1080 will be graphic resolution but he isn't fussed about how they will look, just as long as they run.
If 600 is not enough for this to happen can you give me a bare minimum alternative that won't break the budget to badly.

$700-800 would be ideal, to get the 8GB RAM, and GTX 760/R9 270X GPU would be ideal for 1080p. The intel i3 is a very strong dualcore with hyperthreading (4 threads) and will play most games without issue.

I can vouch for the B85M. We've got 150 of the motherboards in use driving 2560x1440p monitors at work, along with i3's and i5 4440's, and they do their job well. They've got USB 3.0 and all the bells and whistles of SATA 3.

a brick n mortar store MAY be a solution to the financial issue, ive built some pretty mean systems for less than $800. although, i admittedly dont know if u have them in AU.

you need to add cpu cooler. this is australia not albion

my build updated with cheaper psu http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/VBHCD3

@helpme
most of suggestions you got here are good for 1080p @ mid or high settings for current games but they arent that powerful and their performance in future will decrease faster then higher end parts. ofc we can fit "gaming" in 600$ but it wont be by any means future proof and most likely it will have problems to run game that come out till the end of this year (far cry 4 for example).
if your friend wants his rig to be future proof it will be better if he save a about 200 more and get one of the low cost sugestions here with r9 270x and it will last for max 1.5-2 years

If you are confident on how to test stuff yourself you can always buy used parts. In the USA, you can swing good used parts or whole computer deals off of local craigslist classifieds. Also you can buy a cheap boxed system on sale like a Dell or HP with an i5, add a videocard (7850/650ti or better), add additional ram to get to 8GB if it doesn't have that much to start with, and you have a good setup.

This guy on this site here , http://toptengamer.hubpages.com/hub/best-build-budget-300-Custom-Gaming-PC ,talks you through building a custom gaming comp for $300. I think he does everything through Amazon, which I'm pretty sure ships there because I've gotten something from Germany before from Amazon. Anyway, hopefully it helps.

The OP has suggested a budget in AU dollars, and also the pricing is much different in AU, so means that $600 AU dollars perhaps doesn't go as far as $600 US dollars. Also, I don't agree with some of the choices made by the writer has made in that link. Never, ever cheap out on a PSU, or else it will take the whole system with it.

Damn I thought PC parts were expensive here! Australia is starting to look like a terrible place :D Not only do things crawl all over trying to eat you but after the creepy-crawlies are done, PC retailers come in to finish you off.

This is what I'd go for in that budget. I know it's an APU and you won't use the GPU component, but it's cheap, unlocked and still cheaper than the i3s. Plus intel's motherboards in that price range lack in quality and included extras. I'd try to look for an APU with a disabled GPU like the 760k coz they're cheaper but they don't have it on that site.
The 260x could probably be replaced for the tad cheaper gtx750 because they perform similarly. But the GTX has only 1GB ram and that may be an issue with some games later on.
If you're using a dedicated GPU, you don't need to worry much about the speed of your ran on modern PCs, so 1333 should serve him fine.
The Case is up to him. The zalman looks decent enough and has usb3 plugs at the top.
The power supply looks quite mediocre but 500W should definitely be enough.
The optical drive is optional if you have another PC and can do a bit of goggling to figure out how to put a win7 install on a flash drive. I haven't used a CD/DVD in years...

If he does a bit of shopping around, he might be able to fit in the 600$ budget. Maybe some 2nd hand components would be a good fit.

I think this system would provide him with decent gameplay at 1080 with a mixture of low/medium settings for a year or two to come. It's an unlocked system, so once things start to get long in the tooth, he could start looking into OCing and turning up the heat.

Yeh man, $600 won't get you too far here in Australia tbh. I think realistically $800 is more of real budget.

I can vouch for these stores here in Australia;
Computer Alliance and Umart are the stores I use the most.
- Computer Alliance - super awesome warranty service and customer care but a little on the pricey side
- Umart - generally the cheapest, warranty service is good but quite slow - Also they will charge a small fee if you don't place an order online to pickup and instead go to the store to order
- Gamedude - all round ok, they don't keep up to date with stock levels on their website though but they have some interesting bits from fairly hard to find manufacturers
- MSY - I try to avoid, they sold me a new mobo but it was in fact used or a factory second.
- PCCaseGear - online only unless you live in Victoria but generally middle of the road for pricing and pretty good service

I believe they all post across Australia too.

There are obviously more stores out there but I haven't used them so I can't say anything about them.

I'd check umart's website every few weeks as they have some insane specials occasionally. I picked up a Gigabyte 7850OC 1Gb for my work PC for $110AUD back in March. Insane deal if you ask me.

I did a quick Intel build on Umart's website for $710

Case: Antec One $69 http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=2&id2=207&sid=84201

or for an extra $20
FSP 550W Raider Series 80 Plus Silver PSU $85 http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&id2=140&bid=2&sid=107062

optional;
Asus DRW-24D3ST $20 http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&id2=20&bid=2&sid=135859

The reason I say $800 is more realistic is to try and bump up the CPU to an i5 and bump the ram up to 8GB.
cpu; Intel I5-4460 $209 http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&id2=13&bid=2&sid=190376

Hey I've come up with a build with bits and pieces from all of you. Flashing windows is already setup so no drive required. Any thoughts opinions?
Where can I save money/add somewhere else

@helpme - unfortunately we can't see the stuff from that link, as it is only stored on the cache of your browser. Instead could you post the permalink which is near the top of the PCPartPicker page. That way anyone can see it ;)
