[Simple Question] Can I use "News Paper" & Ethenol 96% (White)...

Hello everyone,

I am planning to clean my CPU and reapply thermal-paste. However, since I live in Vietnam, I couldn't find any lint-free toilet wipes or quality cleaning cloths that is use for wiping glasses. Also, don't even ask about cafe filter paper. Vietnam doesn't have that...

So as an alternative, can I use pure white 'ethanol' and news paper to take off thermal paste?

It's a shame you don't have Coffee Filters. Best, Cheapest Lint Free Wipe going. Newsprint has 2 issues I can see. 1 it's pretty loose fibered so might leave "lint" and 2 the Ink especially when you put ethanol on it the ink will definitely run/lift.

Newspapers is a big no-no. Because ink.

The alcohol you use cannot have anything in it other than distilled water. If it has any fragrance, flavoring, or coloring, don't use it.

Makeup pad, cotton ball, gauze, old white clean shirt is fine. If your going to use ethanol then just a very small amount

The white ethanol is a good question. I don't know how it is there but here ethanol does have oil residue in it. Mostly from the tanks its transported in. (I use to haul gas) Acetone is probably a better choice (fingernail polish remover) but do not get it on anything else. It will eat paint and lacquer. Rum or vodka might be a safer alternative

Isopropanol alcohol (used for cleaning wounds) is the best readily available alcohol to use. You should be able to get it from a pharmacy or even a medical area of a department store.

Yeah I use Pure Acetone and Coffee Filters as it's easier to get than Isopropyl if you can believe that...

Thanks for the comments and great adivce. I will try and look for cheap Lint Free Wipes (Dry) again and see if they have it anywhere around Ho Chi City.

God sake... Vietnam country is the worse place to build computers and maintain it. Half of the PC techs I talked to at the shop, they showed me what they use to remove thermal paste, which of course "Ethanol (Blue dyed)" which I am horrified! I am NOT joking! But, I am so glad that I found one pharmacy that sells '96% pure white ethanol'. It doesn't have any colours (crystal clear). I ended up buying a crate (24 x 20ml) for repairing PCs since it's so rare here.

The type of ethanol doesn't have anything like you said. It's also certified for hospital use. But, some other PC idiots in Vietnam, they went and use colored Ethanol (Blue Dye Substance).

Let me tell you this...

Vietnam is a joke and I've been to countless pharmacies. None of them stock / sell Isopropanol 70% OR 90%. The closes I can find is 96% pure white ethanol.

No because it is wax treated it won't clean very well anyway and the ethanol can break down the wax. Man I would send you a pack of Coffee Filters if it's really that bad. The pack would last you a lifetime. Do they not drink coffee there?

Seriously, they use one of the metal filters for cofe... no paper filters...

or just use clean cloth, it may leave some cotton fibers but i guess its ok
it wont affect the temp much

Well... I just got a phone call from a friend and he just bought one big box of cofe filters in Japan and hand carry them over for me. He even said "screw Vietnam and their idiocy. Let me handle this. So chill"... LOL

1 Box = 400 pieces of cofe filters. (straight from japan warehouse)
