This is in a budget build for my student sister. Looking at the gelid icy vision but wondering if anyone has something nice and quiet going spare? The reference 5850 cooler on it is on its last legs

Thanks

Benchmark Scores I don't play benchmarks.
You can try Jetsters suggestion, and also look for dead cards with working coolers.
Not sure of the heat output of a 5850 but my 7950 runs cool with an Icy Vision onboard, very cool if I turn the fans up. ;)
Although the Icy Vision fans can't be PWM controlled they CAN be controlled: either plug them into a spare motherboard header and control the speed through BIOS or use an external controller, the Zalman FanMate is a little clumsy but works perfectly, just connect it to a motherboard header (to monitor the speed) and set it to 1700 RPM, using something like Speedfan to check, once set it's nearly silent and, assuming decent case ventilation will keep the card sub 70C, even under exreme loads.

got a picture of the card??

I may have stock coolers from my old 5850s that i used to have that were made by sapphire. Its one of them ones where the fan was in the middle.

you can have that for price of postage if i can find it, I think i got a pretty go idea where it is.

Its an xfx card with the leaf blower fan at the end rather than the middle. Will get some pics tomorrow

Would like to improve the temps on it, I was running furmark on it before with everything stock and it was right up at 90degrees, fan on about 50% right on the cusp of leaf blower mode.

Another option - I have a 7870xt that could donate its fan, then I'd get the shiny new cooler. I just don' t know if the 7870 cooler would fit the 5850

But its not really worth buying an aftermarket cooler. Maybe someone will donate something

I agree the age and value of the 5850 card doesn't warrant the spend. Which is why I'm here! :)

I had an AC Twin Turbo Pro on my 5870 and it ran great. You should be able to find an AC Twin Turbo, Twin Turbo Pro, or Twin Turbo II out there for a decent price and all of them will work out well for you ;)

I think It doesnt make any difference if the fan was in the middle or a leaf lower design. mine were reference 5850s too, nothing special. only real difference was the different cooler. If you want it then let me know

Yeah I am interested - We just need to be sure the PCB is the same so I can be sure it will fit.

I guess this is the official reference cooler? I haven't found a pic of a sapphire card with this cooler

Closest I found was this

http://www.overclock.net/t/672328/sapphire-pics-of-a-new-cooler-for-the-5850

I did find that some sapphire 5850s are a shorter PCB like this one

What do you think?
