Upgrading to GTX 970 or 980

currently i am using a MSI GTX 780 Gaming 3gb, but thinking about grapping MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4gb to save some power and still have the same performance almost.

I will still be running my Yamakasi Catleap 2560x1440@120hz, but i can't totally figure out if i should go GTX 970 or 980...

MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4gb is priced at about 474,59 USD / 369,27 euros
MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4gb is priced at about 810,54 USD / 630,68 euros

i am have read W1zzard's reviews but i am still thinking if it's really worth to spend almost double to get the GTX 980 over the GTX 970, bcs i only have a ITX setup and not planing about SLi in the future...

970's performance is better than the 780, and not to mention incredibly easy to overclock, I had mine at almost 1500mhz core on my first day, and it was hitting 980 stock performance.
I personally could quite happily afford the 980, but frankly the price difference vs performance increase simply put me off. I've had no issue with running the 970 on 1440p plus an extra monitor, so I'd go for the 970 for now.

i know how you feel in italy is the same power is very expensive here too .
about go for the 970 or the 980 well i dont know where you have find this prices but for me are too high because on ebay i find much lower prices for the 970 and 980 and im talking about europe and italy of course .
for what i see the 970 is a beast for the money and the 980 is a much powerfull version and efficent card than the 780 ti and cost much lower so depend on your needs and for me the 970 i worth more and you can save money for other things xd.

If I was to recommend a card for you it would be the 970 but im unsure if its worth it over yours.

You could probably undervolt your current GPU to save power.

I'm in the same situation here (sorry for hijacking), I've decided to upgrade my cpu to a 4690k instead but still have my gpu listed for sale. Trying to sell it for more or at least the same as a gtx 970. My original though was to sell my 780 while I can still claim a reasonable price, so is the upgrade worth it?

I think the absolute spot on for an upgrade is the 970. It outperforms the 780, has an extra GB of VRAM, and uses less power. I've never been excited about anything but the top card in a lineup, but the 970 being cheap, and cheap(er) to run while providing a large leap forward in performance makes it the perfect choice if you are trying to decide.

I'm kind of attached to my 780 (only had it a year and have yet to see it pushed hard), so I won't be upgrading. My fiance' though will be, as she has a 660Ti....sheesh, that's night and day almost between them two! SO: definately go 970!!

Zotac and Gainward already have insanely low prices if you're into that kind of stuff, I really don't see them dropping more then those any time soon.

The most power efficient graphics card ever built.
In my opinion Gaming itself indicates that the one is doing something that most common people don't do or can't afford . If you are Gamer then you shouldn't be thinking about less power consumption stuff as gaming itself indicates that most expensive/capable your Video card the better it looks and get .
I don't use video cards because I can't afford high power bills.
I am not the Gamer but If I ever buy Video card then surely I will also take interest in it will not then think about power bills that's how I do.
I can totally understand your situation same thing happened with me while building my mod I went on adding lots of lightings and LED fans which were immediately followed by buying Bay switch ON/OFF controller to reduce power consumption when high power bills numbers started appearing in my bills.
If I was in your situation I would just shut down my PC for some days in month and go out and find the others ways of getting entertained or doing some animated activities but keep using same Video cards.

they haven't dropped prices in my country, they more or else are like a few 100 danish kroners apart depending on Brand, Cooler and pcb...

If you need/want the single fastest GPU available for purchase atm then the 980 is for you, for anything & everything else the 970 will do just fine especially when overclocked

That's just to make yourself feel better. Which can be worth money indeed.

But in w1z's review it's 40W less during gaming. That's just not worth it. As others have said, undervolt your stuff instead. Turn the freezer/fridge down a tiny bit. Don't use the oven as a space heater. Buy LED light bulbs and turn them off agressively. Read a book.
