Old school / melancholy gaming build

So , yeah, i needed a 2nd physical pc in another room.
My main rig is 2700k + 760 GTX, so like i said this is for the good old times.

Bought some stuff from ebay dirt cheap, combined with what i had laying around and voila.
And i also wanted a good cpu.

What i have:

E5300
Foxconn G31MXP-K
1x NVIDA 8800 GTX
1 GB ram Crucial 667 Mhz ( for now, i will put 4 gb ddr2 800 mhz if i can find them in my house)
19" Monitor @ 720p

I ran Assassin's Creed 4 on high and saw that i've got 25-30 fps, i couldn't believe it.
Pretty smooth most of the times.
GPU load was 80 % and CPU at 100 % both cores.

So these are my questions:

1. If i get an E8400 will i see better results vs the e5300 ?
2. If i get a Q6600 and keep it at stock, will i see better results than the e5300/e8400 ?
3. How about a Q8200 ?
4. Or a Q9300 ?
5. Q9450 ?

Only interested in stock specs, no OC, asking for 720p and maybe 1080p.

Any input is of great help.
Thank you.

Q9450 if you can get it real cheap - otherwise stick with the Q6600, Quad Core will be useful in a LOT of games. the 8800GTX should do OK fine for 1080p though you might need to make a little sacrifices in graphical quality depending on the game. 4GB RAM is a must - if you cant find it then buy some if you can.

E8400 or Q9x. Clockspeed and cache is the most important.

I'd get a better GPU too, something that doesn't suck so much power. If you want to buy new, R7 250 or better, if old the GTX 550ti is usually pretty cheap.

Perfect.
Thanks guys.
The 8800 GTX has to stay, always wanted one, don't know why. :) And the one i got is so quiet 80 % fan and under 60 degrees after 15 minutes of gameplay. And looks so good from the outside, it bearly has scratches on it. Perfect to collect it, just what i wanted.

Ah and to add this in the mix, if i cand get a SLi socket 775 motherboard, what cpu is best in the following conditions:

1. Will a Q6600 at stock 2.4 Ghz will suffice for 2x 8800 GTX at 720p ?
2. Will a Q6600 at stcok 2.4 Ghz will suffice for 2x 8800 GTX at 1080p?

Suffice = i mean will not limit / bottleneck the cards from running 100 %

Thank you.

Love the idea of this. Once you have settled on a finished build would you post a benchmark thread of a few modern games. Would be great to see how it stacks up against modern systems :)

Yes, thanks for the support.
That's the plan.
I'm silently hoping (on ebay) that i can get a Nforce 680i SLI motherboard for not a lot of money and another 8800 gtx will come eventually.
Kinda rare the 750i, 780i and 790i on ebay.co.uk

All i need now to find out is what cpu will suffice the above scenarios.

Suffice is hard to define. I doubt you can run Watch Dogs at 1080p.

Search Q9450 xeon equivalent for socket 771, there is some easy mod for 775 motherboards - you can find it easy in google. Xeons are way cheaper than desktop variants and actually the same cpus, perhaps better crystals. Still if you want to game old games there is no need for quad cpu.

This plan is very good. Q9650 can suffice 2 8800 GTX's.

i still have e8400. i highly reccommend it. it will be enough for 2 8800gtx, i had 2x8800GT it was running crysis 30+ (up to 70 fps) on highest settings + some ultra mod.
few advices those older cards have hard time with AA. lower it for instant fps gains.
you would be benefit from OC to 3,5-3,7Ghz a lot. Its very easy with E8400.
q6600@stock will be bottleneck in that system (100%sure)
680i, 750i, 780i are overclock friendly.

I'm in UK but thank you for the offer.

So to conclude.

1.q6600 @ 2.4 - enough for 1x 8800 gtx (any resolution) ? Right?

2.but for 2 it will limit 2x 8800 gtx . Got it.

3.if i get the G0 revision and oc-it at 3 ghz will that be enough for 2x 8800 gtx ?

Thank you.

3ghz q6600 is a better then 3ghz e8400. and mostly you would get more fps in newer games or top of the line old ones. i read many and i mean many reviews in 6-7 years and as one of first ppl i think freak mentioned at that times cache and more herz gave more performance and was more important. ar 3.0-3.2 6600 can loose to 3,5-3,7 e8400 in many caces can win in other.

in short i would say with better cooler it depends on the price. i saw one post here: i updated from q6600--> to e8400...
but you have a nice system already, so juzt do yourself a favor OC any q or e cpu u get.

edit:q6600 or other cpu @2.4-3.0 has more potential 3.5-3.7 was about sweet spot. tried it myself with e8400@3.0 to 3.8 with 8800gt sli got more fps in many games.

Overall, if you can't get your hands on a Q9450 (and I just sold mine here on TPU), then your best bet is e8400 and overclocking it to 3.8 at least. At those speeds, it will beat a q6600 in most games, and it can drive two decent GPU's.

I used one on a 750i SLI FTW for two GTX 460's, and it rarely had trouble keeping them fed. Only BFBC2 slowed it down, because it's so CPU multi-threaded.

LOL, ok, 4 years later I'll dig one out. Get real. So, I'll play along and just say I was delusional at the time. I'm out. That's what I get for trying to show someone they can in fact do something.

Thanks guys.
I've got on the way a XFX 680i motherboard.

And i also found a QX6850, see if i can get it cheap, if not i will get the q6600 g0, oc at least 3.0 and until i can find the second 8800 gtx.

The q9x50 are expensive i mean more the the qx old series.
The 771 mod someone suggested hm, looks nice, the prices are excellent but for now i will try the normal route and see how it goes.
