Laptop won't Turn On

Someone came to me with an HP 2000 laptop that won't turn on. Luckily I had the same model laptop in working condition, so naturally I tried replacing out the battery and cord power supply to rule those out. The laptop still won't turn on, any ideas? I've already tried holding down the power button with everything removed.

So, no power what so ever? No flash of lights, no beeps, no nothing? If yes, the first thing I do is pull out the battery, use a digital multimeter to verify the power supply is putting out the volts it claims it should, then plug the power supply into the laptop and check again. If it is still as dead as a doornail, I'd wager the motherboard is shot and start looking for a new computer.

Where the jack gets plugged in the laptop, there's a single LED that turns blue, a few seconds later it just stays solid red.

EDIT: When the battery is removed and the laptop is plugged into the wall, the LED stays blue

What's the model number of it? It is probably on the underside of the laptop.

Once I've done a hard reset with no luck and know the power supply/battery is good....I'll stand with Ford GT and say the motherboard needs a closer look.

Although...I usually take a look at the motherboard power jack connector first and make sure it isn't loose. It could have snapped a prong if somebody tripped over the cord. Although, you're stating the lights seem to be working, so I'm not sure.

I'd go back to my friend who dumped this laptop on you and ask him 'exactly' what happened when it stopped working and go from there. Even if it boils down to replacing the motherboard, it's not too expensive and the job is rather easy. I happen to be typing this on an HP 2000(2b16nr). cheap little laptops but they're pretty durable...this one came to me with a broken lcd screen. $53 Spent on Amazon and somebody's trash became my new toy.

Oh...a 'DV' 2000, a tad older...wouldn't bother with it probably. If you could find a cheap motherboard and perhaps upgrade the cpu it'd still be a good unit for web browsing etc, but it's not really worth dumping any money into.

It doesn't say which LEDs are which colors so red/blue doesn't mean much to me.

Hmmm, I don't know. I'll probably just offer to backup any files they may have wanted and tell them to get a new laptop. I could possibly find a new motherboard online and replace it, but I really don't feel like messing with it. Plus, I didn't make any promises I could fix the issue.

Have you tried showing the laptop some love? I once had a laptop not turn on until I gave it a hug. I tried again and it booted up. True story.

If the light on the power brick goes out then the board has a short. Replace
