Just out of curiosity, what do people do with older hardware? I see that most people repurpose them into home servers, however I can't really see myself needing a dedicated. I use Plex as my media server on my 2600K and that seems to fit my needs for my media streaming. I have SSDs on all 3 of my PCs, and each one has multiple hard drives that back files up, so I'm not overly worried about data loss either.

The older computer is anchored by:
QX9650
ASUS X38 P5E WS

I had originally used it as an underclocked media server, but with the 2600K serving as that I don't see a need to have a separate media server.

I've always wanted to run a CS 1.6 Game server, but I am unsure if 4GB of DDR2 RAM will support it, and obviously bandwidth limitations. I have a 50mbs/10mbs connection, but that's assuming no one else at home utilizes that. Any ideas?

Do you run multiple home servers? Is there usage for a second server if the first one does all you need? I was leaning towards this as well, but given that each PC has its own backup and I have Plex running, I don't know if there are huge gains from me running a WHS

I run just one server 20TB with that I don't have the needed of a second one becasue is does all what I need, btw you could sell those hardwares that you don't need.

Note: Everyone of us think things differently,
When I have many hardwares lying around I gust give it away to someone who can need it.
But that is me.

Good question.

I let them run 24/7 as home server and can be used for everything, seeding torrents, converting videos, music, be accessed remotely through ssh...

And here's what I do with excessive components:

1.I put them in their original package if available.
2.Let them stored in a cool and dry place.

I never sell my old/used hardware, I'd prefer to give them for free. "Trash" can't be sold. :shadedshu:

That hardware and your internet connection should be fine for a CS server.

indeed, i think the hardware in question is a little too old to be sold, probably not worth my time.

That's the same thing I do, even if I can sell it I don't do it.

Note: I don't name old hardwares trash becasue what we think that trash is for someone else is precious.

That hardware is not too old, depending on the situation. You could still sell those items. The QX9650 should still bring in over $100 USD (a long way from it's original $999!) There are people who still stick to old platforms, and would see "upgrade" with that gear. Others like the nostalgia of running something older.

CS 1.6 and source do not take much to run a server so yes but you must have the connection to support 10 or more people connected to it

ATM, all of my 3.5" HDDS are on my 2600k rig, so I thought about using it as strictly a file server since my main rig is SSD only, but I think it would be a waste of power to keep it running 24/7, even if i underclocked it to 2.0GHz (older chipset, DDR2 ram, etc), and it's a big ole ATX mobo. The feeling of pushing what's possible in a small area (MITX file server) beats the nostalgia of running something older (technically, my 2500k is "older")

Have you ran one before? I am concerned about the uplink mostly, downlink I think I'm set.

I don't agree, OC'ed in a DDR3 board, that 9650 is just as powerful as any AMD quad core.

Yes I have ran MANY CS 1.6 servers and have one currently on a 100/100 connection :)

Well, that QX9650 is still pretty powerful. My son has one, and coupled with a good GPU and overclocked RAM it performs pretty well, even if not up to the same standards as Sandy/Ivy/Haswell.

It would indeed be overkill for a file server, and not very energy efficient. I run my file/media server off the Xeon equivalent of an e8400 (e3110), and it is pretty energy efficient as well as being more than enough grunt for what I need it for.
