My sister is building a new workstation/gaming rig, but is mostly concentrating on the work part. She asked for suggestions for a GPU that could handle both, I honesty dont know anything about rendering or how it works, if she was looking for plain old gaming i know the logical choice would be the 970, i know there are tons of debates on this 2 cards and their performance. So when it comes down to it, do the extra CUDA cores on the 780 make it a better card to handle Maya, Blender and After Effects(Not sure if AE actually requires a dedicated GPU)?, or is the 970 more than enough? i would really appreciate any suggestions and/or faqs that could help.

Thanks for your time and help!!

Unless u are doing professional work daily, both card does not diff too much. Because a professional job will required a diff GPU. I myself, will always go for the latest one if price n performances more or less the same.

I'd look at the Quadro cards if I were you. Hell, maybe even a Quadro+GTX970 combo and do that.

Gaming on the 970.

Working on the Quadro.

If it's some serious professional work a Quadro card may be worth considering, but gaming performance will suffer and be significantly more expensive. If it's kind of hobyist, or she doesn't need super-precise renders with error correction, then go with a gaming card.
