Crystal Dynamics, a Square Enix studio, today announced that the award-winning TOMB RAIDER (2013) has sold more than 8.5 million copies worldwide, more than any other game in the legendary Tomb Raider franchise’s history. Originally released in March 2013, the game also set franchise sales records for its first day and month.

TOMB RAIDER won numerous awards, including IGN’s Best Overall Game of E3 2012. TOMB RAIDER: Definitive Edition, which included additional content and enhanced graphics for next gen platforms, was released in January 2014 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

“TOMB RAIDER ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players,” said Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics. “Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.”

TOMB RAIDER explores the intense origin story of Lara Croft and her ascent from an untried and untested young woman to a hardened survivor. Armed only with raw instincts and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Lara must fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island to escape its relentless hold.

TOMB RAIDER is available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Mac, and TOMB RAIDER: Definitive Edition is available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

How cool success, Crystal Dynamics. I love Tomb Raider game series Core Design's works. Also Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light game is very impressive. Yeah that's different from other series, but they know how can write lore and quest designs. :)

I still feel on so many levels this title didn't deliver the Tomb Raider feel, or in some ways, even as advertised. It doesn't focus on tomb raiding at all. The hunting wasn't at all necessary for survival. It's not a familiar cerebral TR puzzle solving experience. There were far too many scripted on rails action scenes. The platforming was way too simplistic and easy. It was chock full of QTEs.

This game did indeed expand the fanbase though, because it's basically Tomb Raider bastardized into something it never was, nor ever should have been. Instead of an epic Explore, Platform, Puzzle, Raid experience, it's basically a dumbed down adventure shooter game. As I've said many times, the Tomb Raider franchise has been going downhill ever since the last great one they made, Anniversary.

Like those that followed Anniversary, this one has you merely collecting easy to find artifacts that aren't laden with traps or even guarded. It's a laughable continuation of what used to be legendary. It's also proof that today's gamers are easily impressed, which I feel is a big part of why games are getting so lame.

This certainly isn't the first time a once decent series has been turned into a shallow action shooter to bring in more players, then dubbed a huge success, as if making a shooter out of truly unique action adventure game is a revelation. It isn't, it's called selling out to money.

TR used to strike a good balance between the frustration of PoP-like platformers with button mash combat, and shallow CoD-like shooters, but now it's clearly lost it's way. Once the apple has been bitten there's no going back. SE obviously prefer money over originality and loyalty to TR and it's core fanbase.

PC won because of the frequent, massive price cuts, I'm sure. I think I bought it for <$10 including all DLCs.

Completely agreed. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it meh.

All games aren't following that trajectory. I'm quite impressed with Valkyria Chronicles. Speaking of which, Valkyria Chronicles was a 2008, PS3 exclusive and it was ported to Windows in 2014. Maybe SEGA saw similar sales numbers from one of their games which encouraged them to port it. It apparently paid off!

PC is tremendously easy to port to, doesnt cost money to deploy patches, has longer shelf life for game sales, no second hand sales.

Skyrim Sales:
PC: 8,000,000
PS3: 6,000,000
360: 8,300,000

Borderlands 2:
PC: 4,500,000
PS3: 2,000,000
360: 2,900,000

Bioshock Infinite
PC: 3,200,000
PS3: 1,570,000
360: 1,860,000

Tomb Raider:
PC 3,000,000
PS3: 2,390,000
360: 1,850,000
PS4: 870,000
Xbone: 330,000

As the disparity between console and PC grows and Microsoft / Sony continue to charge for patch distribution etc, PC becomes more viable, Especially for older ports / quick cash grabs. Not to mention no need for physical distribution really.

Yeah, the PC numbers are pretty decent on SOME multiplat titles, but there's still a lot of AAA multiplat games that are selling better initially on console, and those are the sales that seem to still influence simultaneous release devs to crap out excrement on PC, while they polish the console versions. I just wish more devs would get smarter and either do staggered releases like Rockstar, or realize that well made PC ports really can sell well. Instead we constantly see devs like Ubi put their least talented, lowest paid teams on the PC ports, and even sabotage the PC graphics for parity. It's total BS.

Well keep in mind one thing Frag, PC owners tend to be older and have better taste in games. So the crap say Ubisoft ports to PC seldom ever interests me yet many of my more frat boy like friends find their shit amazing / breath taking / so awesome!!!!101101!

When the demographic your selling to is better educated, shit products tend to not sell as well. The biggest problem is most suits running game publishers / devs don't actually play games. THus they see them as a toy or commodity the more you push out the more money you make.

Call of Duty is coming to mind here. PC should dominate it because it's the keyboard and mouse stomping ground but it doesn't because the vast majority of PC gamers don't like it. A sociology thesis could be written on that topic. XD

Where are you getting these sales figures? I always wonder how well games sell on each platform. Do steam release sale data now? I read they didn't which made reliable numbers so herd to come by.

The problem is that publishers only release the numbers when they're trying to reassure investors. If those PC numbers came from the publisher, they likely include all digital downloads as well as retail.

I liked it my self how ever it may of sold 8.5 million but it was on a sale fairly soon after release like most Square Enix games are.

I used to play the old TR games when they went 3rd person but they could get so annoying how ever the 2013 version was on the side of too easy and some what silly controls in combat.

Steam Spy can roughly estimate sales figures by intercepting API calls, WHen games have free weekends it can throw things off but otherwise it tends to be fairly accurate according to a couple developers.
Other sales figures are from VG Chartz aka brick / mortar sales.

Which going by the numbers I posted for Tomb Raider would be fairly accurate :toast:

8,440,000 = pretty damn close to 8.5 million.

LOL, I hate to say it, but you guys sound like typical, run of the mill, "PC Elitists" that think they know a fanbase demographic based on game content.

Ubi was mentioned so I'll use them, since they also tend to be known for rushed ports that often release in bad condition. AC may be bashed a lot for milking, but it's content isn't exactly what I'd call immature as you imply. In fact the puzzles in many of them take a fair bit of thinking to solve. And though the stories that revolve around historic figures are often somewhat contrived, their situations are thought provoking. Ubi if anything are above par creatively. It's really only their technical polish on PC that's lacking.

And for that matter, it's far more immature to label players based on what they play than a game to have mindless content. Some people want to spend their gaming hours just having silly fun vs delving into heavy thought. A lot of them work stressful jobs that require a lot of thinking. It's a way to unwind. I don't feel stereotypes really help gaming or gamers in any way. They only divide and polarize.

I chatted on WideScreenGamingForum for some time, as well as XtremeSystems forum, and I can tell you that money and what most would call jobs of status does NOT equate to an entirely different gaming demographic. If anything what's cool about gaming is it's universal in that sense. It brings equality in a way. The primary reason I left WSGF was not that I got tired of people always talking about their TH2G setups, it was because the games they played were far simpler than what I was into. I didn't attempt to judge their maturity or intelligence by it though, it just wasn't interesting to me.

As for CoD, yeah, a lot of kids play it, many probably very immature and/or lacking in intelligence, but a lot of military and retired military play it too. Are you going to label them as idiot kids too? Like I said, stereotypes are never beneficial or even remotely close to exact science. As the verse goes, judge not, lest ye be judged. I think part of the misconceptions come from the fact that the forums are largely flooded with younger players with, lets say, anxiety issues. There are probably way more players than that whom don't even bother chatting on the forums, like people with busy schedules that don't have TIME to.

One of the best games I've played, I loved every second of it, too bad the sequel is an xbone timed exclusive, but we should get a "definitive Ed" on pc with better graphics an all the dlc once that exclusivity expires :rockout:

This game is very often discounted on steam at $3.

I like this game but this is mostly action games a la Time Crisis not Tomb Raider haha.
The playthrough is kinda like this:

Puzzle -> Action -> QTE -> QTE -> QTE -> Action -> Action -> Action -> QTE -> Action -> Action -> Action -> QTE

with optional Puzzle side quest lol.

Personally. I don't care which demographic group is buying enough PC games to beat the console sales numbers. I'm just glad it's been happening not only on independants, but also AAA titles. Most of the media would have people believe otherwise.

The media would have us believe pc gaming is dying, but the sales figures say otherwise.

In regards to pc digital download prices vs console games retail prices, a product sold is better than no product sold so even software is sold at a discount its one customer they might not even have had otherwise. With digital the overheads are far less so they probably still make the same or even more profit as the plastic in wallmart/gamestop makes them, even with massive discounts. I personally only with pc see big discounts on digital games, go on xbl or psn and everything is lolprice and that i think is to keep the brick and mortar stores happy.

I also find that pc gamers tend to go for older quality titles when there is a lack of quality new releases, compatibility is high for older titles, where as console gamers tend to buy up anything to just have something to play. Games on consoles have less shelf life than pc games too, pc games can still be found selling online for years after while a game on a console has that small window where it sells the bulk of its copies.

I've even found that for whatever reason, Retail disks a year or two old (sometimes 6 months to a year) frequently sell cheaper than a digital download. That makes them the better buy. I have found many like this and then install on Uplay, Origin, or Steam, for many times 20% or more cheaper than the digital copy on each of those services.

Total number sold don't really matter. Its revenue generated. Most people on the PC bought Tomb Raider for 10 bucks during a Steam sale. The numbers on the console were 59.99 every time! PC gaming is dying. PC's are dying.

I don't think it's dying, but I agree that units sold is a useless stat compared to actual sales figures, especially considering the huge discounts on Steam. It's similar to the AMD vs Nvidia thing. AMD often sell more units, but at a lower margin.
