PC wont turn on

Hi

My Dad gave me his old pre-built PC to fix. It turns on for a second, no signal to monitor, then turns off. No beeps coming from the motherboard. I've tried it without RAM and HDD unattached, same problem.

What I need to know is if it's the Motherboard or CPU that's dead. I have no LGA775 system to test components out.

Could be the psu and can be even the power button of the case .
Have you tried to clear the cmos too?

looks like shortcircuit, try to take the components off from the case and test it back

I've tried with a different PSU, same issue. If the CPU was dead the mobo would at least beep?

usually it will give you sign, just try to turn it on without processor
if it does beep, it looks the board got err

fans still spin up for around 3 seconds.

you need to remove Motherboard from the case so you can start to bench test it
the specs for this system would be nice to know

Just trying to make sure for us; but, it does have a system speaker connected?

Reseat the components and electrical connections.
clean the dimm's contacts, remove the cpu and check it for good/clean connection.
Are any of the caps leaking or swollen?

Would you check motherboard, possibly the chip that is overheat and have gone bad, check all the chips . Just put you finger and feel any of those chip have a soft spot or there any hole in them.
