This is infuriating. After playing every evening since launch, the game now crashes to the desktop unless launched in safe mode. I literally just saved a game and exited an hr ago, now it refuses to work :(

After reading around and testing, I found it is a bug for crossfire that the latest patch introduced.
If the grass quality is anything above normal and the save game is in the north of the city, the game crashes to desktop :(

Edit - I wanted to post in the RockStar support forums in the thread where others have the same issue, but apparently new players can't use the forums!

Living out in the sticks, the fastest connection I have is through my phone. If I tether over USB and place it in just the right spot, I can get about 8-12 Mbps. It's been downloading overnight for a few days now and I'm only at 30GB complete.
If only the downloader would work off of multiple connections, I could have my 1.5Mbps DSL + a varying WISP connection + my phone. Might actually get done in a reasonable amount of time.

At 12Mbps, it should have been done in 11.38 hours. I guess my phone hasn't been consistently fast. :(

I think should be able to run it at 1080p 60fps, if something would hold you back it would be the i3.

The difference is VERY noticeable. There is some videos on Youtube comparing the game to all consoles and it will open your eyes.

Ouch! well I had a nap and it finally finished. Loving it so far but I'm actually not really sold on the FPS mode unless I'm shooting. I feel very disconnected

Not likely with 7950, since the memory requirements are around 6 GB. I play on 5760x1200 on dual 780 TI, and get a solid 60 FPS with everything maxed. Th optimization of this title really does impress me since I've got many rigs and have tried them all, and they all play this game really well.

I play on a my old 7970 at work and it plays it pretty good with some stuff lowered.

On that note though I did have to OC my 7970 to get it that smooth

Finally got it installed and played a bit last night. I'm on a 7970 OC at a mild factory OC of 1000, with a stock i7 950 and 8GB 1600 RAM. Runs and looks pretty good. I'm just using the settings it set itself to for the most part, except I've disabled VSync because I don't really get any screen tear, except for very minor bits here and there in some cutscenes. It's hardly even noticeable. I'm getting good enough FPS to maybe crank one or two settings up a bit, but I'll wait until I do some large scale escapes before I decide that.

I don't know if I'll like this story much. I'm used to playing one character throughout a game. The idea of bouncing around randomly between 3 characters might affect my immersion somewhat, but we'll see. Franklin's boss and he and Lamar had my laughing from the onset though, so it feels good enough to at least keep me invested from a humor standpoint.

funny you should say that; trevor is my favourite character... as for the bouncing around the three characters, google "gta V... back on the ranch"... it is a concept that keeps you interested...

BTW, i have a fx8350, gtx 970, 8GB ram 2133 9,11,10,30,2t oc to 4.4. running GTAV with everything very high or ultra. and all advanced graphics maxed. (only FXAA)
and i get about 60 fps on a 1080p (40-85fps)

using afterburner i recorded my framerate etc for the opening scene, and the first mission...

Yeah, I remember playing Max Payne 2 (circa 2003) and being drawn out of immersion a little by playing as Mona Sax but Remedy Entertainment did a good job with it under Rockstar's supervision.

Concept meaning intended to, but like I said, we'll see.

Part of what kept me invested in GTA IV was some highly emotional scenes, like when Niko had to rescue Roman. It was not only a great shootout, but by then it had you really feeling the bind between he and Roman. You were playing Niko exclusively and they took proper time to build his character and the relationship between the two. Of course it helped that the writing was excellent, with a lot of great humorous response from Niko.

To me it comes down more to story structure, writing quality, and familiarity with a well developed protagonist, than the gimmick of switching roles to try and keep you interested. In fact it almost seems like a red flag, as if they're saying, "Well, the story and characters aren't as good, but we'll try to keep you from getting bored by being able to switch between 3 of protagonists".

With Mona Sax it wasn't too bad because it was only brief segments, and they emphasized working together in a life or death situation to try and bolster the love affair between them. My main gripe about Max Payne 2 was it was too short. Best in series by far IMO is Max Payne 3.

On the 970, sometimes I wish I had one, but if anything this game more than any other lately is just making me confident I made the right decision to hold out for Pascal. I don't really think most of the bells and whistles I don't have turned on or up would be all that noticeable anyway.

Most of the advanced graphics features are more noticeable if you're standing and gawking off in the distance. GTA V is mostly about short to medium range action going on. Having that extra GPU power is nice, but not a necessity in a well made game like this, even despite the size of the world.

I have explored almost all the map, blame coffee and a minimal amount of sleep, and an perfectly content with 45-60FPS (occasional now down in the high 30's but my TV does frame interpolation so its tear and lag free, but over 60FSPS it tears some so Vsync on) for the extra draw distance it gives me and the more amazing visuals, grass and everything on Ultra/Very High, using CCC for AF and 2X AA as with 15.3 I get corruption in the lower right corner enabling it in game.

I say you're nit-picking. The story-line depth offered by the use of several characters is critical to the emotional state and actions of the parties involved. It's not a tool to cover bad writing; it's a way to show you why the characters are acting as they are. It would have been EASIER to twist the story slightly to be with just one character, and have the other an NPC, and as you've mentioned, Rockstar has shown to be capable of single-character-centered stories in the past.

Sidenote:

Last night I killed erocker, just to collect the bounty on his head. Surprised he didn't return the favor. :p ROFL....

I thought Niko Bellic was a ridiculous character. I like the characters in GTA V more.
