DVI-D to DVI-I adapter

Quick question:

My mobo is a msi gaming 5 z97 and has a DVI-I port for integrated graphics. I just sold my graphics card so I intend to use my on board graphics for a few weeks before I receive my new card.

Problem is: my monitor doesn't support anything but dvi-d. Which means when I hook up my dvi-d cable to my mobo and monitor I get no image.

Do you think that I could use a dvi-d to DVI-I adapter to get an image??

Yes if the GPU has DVI it will be fine. Unless really old most cards are either dvi-i or dvi-d, not dvi-a.

Wait u get no signal with dvi-d, the port must be analogue then...what board do you have? You got on-board video enabled?

You do not need an adapter to use DVI-D with a DVI-I port. DVI-I is a DVI-D port that just had extra pins to carry a VGA signal as well.

Ok let'S clarify things up a little:

I have an MSI GAMING 5 z97 motherboard with an i5 4690k cpu with NO GRAPHICS card atm because I just sold mine (quicker then expected) therefore whilst I wait for a new video card, I must use ON BOARD graphics.

Here is what I need to figure out: I have a Yamaksi Catleap Monitor. It ONLY has a korean dvi input. I'm 99% certain it'S dvi-d. As for my motherboard on board graphics, I'm guessing I should be getting an image but no I'm not getting any. Here is a list of my back panel ports:

- 1 x PS/2 keyboard/ mouse combo port
- 1 x LAN (RJ45) port
- 4 x USB 2.0 ports
- 4 x USB 3.0 ports
- 1 x VGA connector
- 1 x DVI-D connector
- 6 x OFC audio jacks
- 1 x HDMI port, supporting a maximum resolution of 4096X2304@24Hz/ 2560X1600@60Hz/ 3840X2160@60Hz/1920X1200@60Hz

As you can see, I have a dvi-d port there. Now for the sake of the argument, let's imagine that I somehow have my ON-BOARD graphics DISABLED. How would I turn them back on if I can't see what I'm doing lol?

(p.s. am I right in assuming most PC monitors have a DVI-I input? or is it DVI-A?....... cause I know the catleap monitor I have is supposed to come from Korea where they use an uncommon dvi connexion... which I can confirm to be dvi-d)

It should default to the iGPU when no discrete card is detected unless the BIOS is setup to force iGPU init first. DVI-D is fine. The only time you need DVI-I/A is when you plan on using an old school VGA monitor. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter.

I have a feeling I went into my bios (long ago) and disabled ON-board graphics. Is there a way to revert to bios defaults manully (Without needing to see what's going on on the monitor) ?

I may be WAY OFF here but, I thought, once the PCI-e slot is vacated, on-board graphics would run automatically, I have an older board here and the on-board d-sub cable and DVI from the GPU both work at the same time. I can plug them both in, and then switch from one to the other, via my monitor's input menu.

IDK, I know some people turn it off on the Haswell's to save heat? Or whatever. So, yea, could be a bit screwed without a loaner/donor/paperweight GPU around to turn it all back on.

Yes, there should be a reset cmos jumper on your motherboard. Use that, or just pop the battery out for 10 seconds and put it back in. Do this with the power to the PC diconnected.

Also, the Intel graphics might not support your monitor.

It works like that if it is set to auto, but on some boards if you manually set it to disable it won't automatically come on.

If he connects a DVI-D cable to a DVI-I port and gets no signal, the port must be analogue What part of that isn't logical?
Ohhh...just the parts where you assume that connecting a DVI-D cable to a DVI-A port is even possible. And/or that DVI-I doesn't combine digital and analog signals in the same connector. Stuff like that.

Um...about that BIOS...Don't think it is possible to Blindly go through that monster. Good Luck!

About CMOS, I was just reading in another Forum, MSI did not ship a CMOS Jumper with the board.

So, like was said above, unplug, remove battery, have some toast and maybe a beer. Put battrery back in and plug it in, Should work.

We are talking MSI...:p

Quick question about hard resetting the bios:

Let's imagine I hard reset the bios (which would set on board graphics back to enabled or auto) would this procedure make me lose the Bios OC profiles I had created???

There, fixed them both for you, hint: scroll up.

:p

Also, he asked for an adapter. I assumed he had a DVI cable. So, perhaps he has a DVI-D cable...

What do you mean? I'm highly insulted, it makes perfect sense to me...?

Dude, I was referring to the port on the monitor....as he was using a DVi-I port on the card..;) Albeit I am assuming.

I have not looked into those higher resolution monitors in a long time, but the last time i looked they needed a video card of certain requirements. I think you will need a different monitor. I have not looked into this, again this was last year when i looking to get one of that brand Yamaksi Catleap Monitor. Cannot use on-board or APU graphics chipset.

Oh... Yeah that would totally make sense. I think I'm just gonna buy a PC monitor at the local best buy and hook it up with Hdmi on board and just refund the said monitor once I buy my new card.

I'm waiting for the other non reference gtx 980ti models to come out

DVI-I is both analog and digital, it can not be just analog. If it was just analog it would be a DVI-A port, that is why DVI-A exists.

A DVI-D monitor will work just fine with a DVI-I port.

Do you have an HDTV in the house? Just connect the HDMI on the computer to a TV and use the TV as a monitor until you get the new card.

However, that still may not work since some of the Catleap monitors don't work with Intel graphics. Some of the generic Korean monitors don't have a scaler board, so the GPU has to have a scaler, which the Intel GPU doesn't have.

Maybe you need one of these?
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NWIQLU/?tag=tec06d-20

It's an adapter that removes the analog pins:

You screw in a DVI-I cable to the DVI-I end and screw the DVI-D end into the DVI-D jack on the monitor.

Alternatively, just use a DVI-D (both ends) cable.

As you can see, I have a dvi-d port there. Now for the sake of the argument, let's imagine that I somehow have my ON-BOARD graphics DISABLED. How would I turn them back on if I can't see what I'm doing lol?
Install a graphics card, plug the monitor into the graphics card, go into BIOS, turn integrated video back on, turn off computer, remove graphics card, plug monitor into onboard, turn computer on.

I know that, however I missed the "DVI-D monitor" part....I read DVI-I cable and assumed the monitor as A input since it was working with DVI-I... Afterward I noticed it was DVI-D only.

That's why I said disregard my comments. :)
