We are testing software-based voltage control on AMD's Radeon Fury X, at up to 1.37V, in order to investigate what overclocking gains can be expected. We also measure the real-life performance effect and how voltage changes power consumption.

The VRM crappy cooling spoils the fun...

At higher voltages actually the VRM internal current limiter or thermal protection kicked in?

Great article, I am saddened by the overclocking results though. A Fury X wont be my next purchase.

Will you be giving us any results from the Fury (non X)?

Thanks for all the hard work W1zzard. So the conclusion is that fury(x) remains an overclocking dud.
While heavily overvolted and overclocked, it's still slower than a custom 980ti :(

Seems like the "Overclockers' dream" overclocks worse than an average 7970 (clock/volt).
Seems a few might be seeing Red over these claims

Nothing against AMD. Bull is bull though .....

smc just blocks the usual methods of changing voltage, i dont think it affects voltage scaling

I (and I guess we all) thought Fiji would "overclock like a dream once the voltages are unlocked". But seeing this article, I am yet again disappointed on Fury X. The clocks aren't that much increased either, and the real world performance, which matters the most, is totally nailed. Many people would say this results are good, but I don't see it like that. 980 Ti clocks better, consumes less power, costs the same (or $50 less) and has more consistent performance. Don't know, I think I've lost the fascination for the underdog that I was hoping would once triumph over all the topdogs.

Now I'm really starting to heavily doubt Zen to be any turnaround point for AMD.

At least now we know that AMD has no clue what an overclocker is or what he/she dreams of...
I guess they had something else in mind when they said something about an "overclockers dream"! :toast:

So, all that extra voltage, and total power consumption, for that pitiful of an increase in performance?

wow.....

I mean, I don't expect much from amd, but this is kinda pathetic. I guess the 980ti will have to do instead.

Perhaps this means that zen and arctic islands will also be disappointments? AMD's word doesn't seem to matter much.

EDIT: just observed the memory overclock benchmarks. even with that, we are talking a whole ~3fps increase with over 100 watts more power. just.....wow.

What's the performance like in other games besides bf3?

Also, compare stock vs undervolt -48mv and 1050mhz stock vs ~1140mhz core you guys obtained with that undervolt? The power consumption went down a lot, while still getting basically OC performance, correct? If I am reading your charts correctly.

It looks like it can be very power efficient with an undervolt!

It looks like it does not go much higher with overvotling after awhile yet it can be undervolted to get an overclock beyond 1100mhz while lowering its power consumption? That is quite impressive if ignoring everything else, I would also like to see some other games with the clocks up to 1200mhz... Either way its an interesting read and now that we have the overclocking results we can see what we have to expect at least from overclocking, now I would be curious about the Fury to see what could be done!
