WIndows 10 : How well/bad did the upgrade work for you ?

Hello,

I have been playing with windows 10 since it became available in my country, and i tried as much upgrade scenarios as possible, ranging from the default GWX upgrade path, to a scratch install. I have also tested the rollback feature. So far i tested the following environments :

Machines:
-Netbook samsung NP-N130 / atom N270, 1Go DDR2
-Notebook Toshiba Lifebook A530 / core i3, 2Go DDR3
-Notebook Fufitsu Siems Esprimo Mobile D9510 / core2Duo P8700m, 4Go DDR3
-VMware & Virtualbox VMs
-Several rigs powered by Core2 duo E5300, Core2 Quad Q9650, Core i7 920

Scenarios:
-Scratch install
-Upgrade from an existing Windows 7 Pro x64 system
-Upgrade from an existing Windows 8.1 Pro x64 system
-Rollback to a former Windows 8.1 system

Once in Windows 10, i noticed the following softwares required some "help" in order to work again, either :
* : an .msi repair
* * : a complete reinstall
* * * : a permanent uninstall ( compatibility mode couldn't fix it )
* * * * : some registry hacks
* * * * * : some minor adjustements

Softwares issues:
MS Money 2005 * * * *
Pinnacle VideoStudio Pro 16 * * *

Drivers issues:

Please share your experience regarding Windows10 migration and possible drivers troubles.

My dad has an HD 4870 and runs windows 8.1, no CCC available, the latest complete HD 4000 AMD drivers were for windows 7 AFAIK so thats nothing new.

I had to install some legacy Catalyst 13 on windows 10, in order to get ride of the screen overscan bug, as a bonus i have a fully functionnal CCC and some decent hardware acceleration for VLC and the likes.

Initially, I had two failed attempts to install. This was because the hard-drive Windows was attempting to install to was not the default start-up drive. Once I changed things up in the BIOS, upgrading went as smooth as silk taking about 20 minutes. 99.9% of everything worked without any problems; The only software that I needed to re-install was Paragon's HFS+.

My forced upgrade attempt failed to activate, got an error code (no button to activate). Went back to windows 7 and I will not attempt to upgrade again for now.

Here's what i did, i was dying to try W10 and couldn't wait for the automatic GWX update to start the installation on its own.

I used MediaCreationToolx64.exe from Microsoft's official download page to get a 32&64 installation iso.

Then i mounted this iso using daemon tools, and started the migration !

i takes 30-45mins to upgrade your existing system to WIndows 10

Can you tell me which version of Catalyst 13 (some modded?) did you use and where did you get it from?

I upgraded about 5 machines so far myself, 2 received the upgrade notification but one failed(3770K) so I had to reinstall windows 7 and then use the tool since this PC no longer got GWX then clean installed after upgrading. The other one(2500K) that got the notification upgraded fine, the other 3(Z3745, P320, I7 640M) I used the media creation tool and those all upgraded fine also but since the P320 notebook had a old 4k series gpu I had to install modded catalysts(from guru3d) to get CCC semi working(crashes sometimes), since the windows update version did not have one and was broken, I'm really hoping AMD makes another legacy driver for HD3k and 4k.

No issue here upgrading both machines in my System Specs. I used the media creation tool. I love it so far.

I upgraded on Friday over my Windows 7 install. I've run into a slight screen flicker on monitor 1 that wasn't present before the upgrade. It's only when the computer is still loading on desktop, and not a deal breaker. Runs games and browser without issue.

I too have this screen flickering on the login screen, the monitor start an auto adjust cycle and stop when it's best fitted. It's with an old DELL E196FP 4/3 LCD

Only have one rig upgraded to 10 from 7, and it went just fine, no real issues to speak of yet. Still waiting on my main rig with 8.1 though, should be soon.

I think the only issue I've noticed is that the pc running on 10 takes long to wake the screen. The pc is always on, but it seems to take an extra second or so to bring screen back on.

Worked fine for me... haven't had a chance to do a clean install of it yet, just the 'save personal files' option. Although I don't like that you cant change the color of the title bar (unless you can, somehow, somebody lemme know).

Did a upgrade from 8.1 and had some issues with Razer drivers and keyboard. Keyboard sometimes won't work in login screen so I was forced to use different keyboard. Also I couldn't update thru the Windows Update. I used Media Creation Tool.
Clean install was good but now I had a problem with stable CPU. Solved by changing from 4.6Ghz to 4.4Ghz.

And Geforce Experience is buggy or it just for me. It just blank in games section. Can't optimize any game.

Hm... I have "Unable to retrieve all current settings. Try restarting the game or changing the settings within the game first." for all games I have. Again something doesn't work...

How'd it work for me, well not worth a shit!

I'm still in the Q for the download. On Thursday I used the MS install tool and it all went fine EXCEPT I had no LAN connection. So I did the roll back to W7 and went to the Asus site to grab the W10 lan driver and did the whole Install again. I removed the Intel lan driver and went to install the one off the Asus site. Well that didn't go very well, the driver would start to load then it ask me to find the correct pathway... Well fuck this I thought for the night so did the roll back.

Well wouldn't ya know it I had no lan connection in W7, so popped in the mobo's CD to load the driver from it and Intel lan wasn't part of the drivers.

Ok well I had the driver stored on another drive and went to load it and same dam thing, can't find correct pathway or something like that. So the roll back borked my system but I always have a perfect image saved so it didn't take long to get back to the norm.

Ok now here's the thing, Saturday I goto the Asus site and low and behold they yanked the lan driver for the driver list... Something's fishy lol

I also got an email from M$ saying my reservation will happen within the next day or two but no more then 2 weeks.. Idiots!!!

I didn't know by looking at my system details that my system is so dam old that I can't even connect to the internet..

That was the only glitch I had on my gaming machine, it defaulted to one monitor (my secondary), prompted me to update my Nvidia drivers through update (which failed, although the other updates were fine), restarted and everything was as it should be, GeForce experience "works" and proper drivers are reported.

Out of curiosity, I decided to do a fresh install. Which went really well, skipped inputting a product key and found it activated after install was complete. However, the Asus Xonar drivers are not windows 10 ready (you can install them through device manager but you loose the control panel). The control panel for asus xonar worked when after the upgrade from windows 8.1. So I switched back to a sound blaster z, which amazingly actually has a windows 10 driver.

try out the uni xonar driver, it works fine for me with windows 10 x64, control panel works too.
